Tri-mode power steps damaged by shop

I think all the guys with TriMode steps on their trucks should be paying close attention to this thread. this looks like something that could happen anywhere that they put the truck on a lift, tire shop etc. They should take full responsibility when they damage your truck, you probably need to talk with the shop owner if possible. The peons are going to deny deny deny.....

I am speaking with the owner. I'm remaining calm. He did not see the damage underneath and neither did I. He just saw the gouges on the top. I kind of dont blame him for thinking that since there was no damage underneath that it didn't happened at his place.

I went to get a tire rotation today (free at STS/Mavis w/ coupon) and I told them about the previous damage and showed them and they used a different lift that you drive on and does not have arms that come in from the outside. I was pleased. He also came inside to check the torque chart. I will be getting my first set of tires there even if they are a bit more.

Just incase any one wanted to know one tri-mode step assembly form GM is $1,398.60. That includes motors and all. With tax that is about 3g's for two replacement steps. Also would have to include labor.

Well now looks like we may have a deal going on some replacement TriMode steps LOL

I am letting the shop get off easy they are an independent shop and they are paying out of pocket. Besides the screw up with my steps they did a great job.

If this was a national chain shop no way I would take nothing short of brand new factory replacements.

Also I will have a couple of extra motors on the shelf for the future.

Nahh door panel is just mud from my boots. It will wipe right off. This is primarily a work truck.

I saw you got the deal on the steps Wildlyfe200. Good for you. Hopefully the shop will own up and help like they should. You might be able to get a little money for your old ones also.

Shop is going to pay for them. They are lucky I settled for used ones. I will hold on to the ones I take off incase I need the motors down the road. I will be diving this truck untill death. Also want to see if I can swap the chrome trim cause I think mine is in better shape than the ones I scored from M3sparky. If not no big deal.

He sent them out freight Cali to NJ. Now I have to pray FEDEX doesn't fubar them all up.

I feel for you op. Incompetence or lack of caring idk. But at 1 month old I took my truck to the dealer to have new tires I bought installed. They scratched all 4 rims. Wow I was in shock. Yes they replaced them but still. Then I said ok I'll use mobile 1 to change my oil since the dealer in incapable. Mobile 1 over filled my oil... Wow. I do my own work now. All shops are incapable as far as my experience. I try to stay out of them

I am starting to feel the same about almost all shops being incompetent. I did my first oil change and will continue to do them. The dealer can keep their two free oil changes. I wish I had the time to do more things myself but I work too hard, i'm tired, and don't have the time.

Get your new ones installed yet?

It has been 95 degrees the last 3 days here. I work outside so i have been exausted. I emailed the shop yesterday asking them to do it and make payment for the steps and no reply back. Not sure if i even want them doing it. A lift and an extra set of hands would make the job alot easier. Doesn't look too difficult just the fact that the steps are heavy and awkward.

I will update when I get them on.

It was less than 95 today and i got them installed not too difficult the second one went on in 20min. After i decided to drive the front of the truck up onto railroad ties that line my driveway to get a few more inches clearance. About 8 or 9 bolts. Air ratchet made things alot quicker. Put a jack under one end removed all the bolts from that side then took the last one out from the other end and kicked the jack out from the step and slid out from under the truck with the step on my lap. Needed a second hand to get them in for about 1 min. Not too bad kinda satisfying. Now to i got to go to that shop and get my dough tomarrow.

    • Length/amount of data capture will be important to consider, sifting through 5 minutes of a data log can be enormous when it is stored in milliseconds. Being able to find the 'event' let alone decipher it.   Presumably the driver would notice something and hit a button to capture the 'window' of data. That window has to be large enough for the operator to recognize the event and react accordingly.    The data has to be able to be retrieved easily.   The data has to be able to be understood. Which is the biggest challenge, dealer techs won't even know what most of it is and would likely not even look at it if an owner brought it to them. Meaning the owner, the least educated/qualified, trying to understand it.    How will the data be presented? Could specific PIDs be selected and a timelapse graph be watched? How will a specific value be noted as abnormal? Additionally, a good data logger would be able to 'learn' normal values for a specific vehicle and flag abnormalities automatically. It could in theory watch parameters degrade over time and suggest maintenance as needed. (If the MAF reading begins tapering off for a given set of other readings - MAP, throttle position, Ambient, etc.. a flag to check air filter.) With the amount of data available, a device (really the vehicle rather than an additional accessory) should be able to do more than issue a DTC. It should be able to run the full diagnostic suite automatically and present a solution rather than a code. (It's not the 90's anymore). The technology is available for the vehicle to not just say "P0087", it should know low fuel pressure, check other PIDs to narrow down the problem itself, and determine if it is a lift pump, high pressure pump, regulator, leak in the fuel line, clogged filter, etc. Even if it can't narrow it down, it should be able to guide the user to the likely problems.   This would be a major problem for dealer service departments, which are the manufacturers customers it is in their collective best interest to NOT have this available to the consumer.   Further, if the owner is going to be the primary consumer of the data, it's got to be at a consumer price point vs. dealer only specialty tool price.   This group is more 'involved' in their vehicle than general public/consumer and will have knowledge, experience, needs and desires that are quite different from the market at large.
    • I put the prof up. If you read what I posted. You can see that housing, cars and income are in line with the era we were talking about. It’s harder in some places easier in others. Let’s agree to disagree and put this back on track, OK? We both are pretty stubborn and hard headed. But I bring receipts. If you wish I will not respond to you in the future.
    • Lets see if I can sum up two pages of nothing useful.    You want to refute your own governments data of the "Purchasing Power" Index FOR THE ENTIRE USA and its territories replacing it with the experience of a single family and its business and label that reality?  Then pound on that for a week hoping it will find traction?    Stan, I've told you several times. I don't do irrational. There are more people in the USA than your family.    I'm pretty sure this tread is so blown up. I'll give you a few days or months if need be to post yourself silent then I'll see if I can find enough parts of the train to reassemble it.
    • Facebook groups hate VSE, poor customer service; their responses to criticisms are pretty poor for a reputable company. I'm not a customer, haven't bought anything from them, but how they handle themselves on social media is a definite "No" for me.
    • $10,000 for a transmission?   Pretty sure I could buy all the parts, tools, and education to rebuild it myself for a quarter of that amount.   or swap it out with a new one...
