Should I avoid the 14 used Silverado?

The headlamps on the LTZ are good, not great. I put in a set of Phillips Crystal Vision Ultra's and they work fine. Perhaps you are confusing the GMC which had the update to their headlamps.

I'm with Steve on this one.

I had a 2014 LT with the double lights, they were fine.

I had two 2015 Sierra SLEs and I was not thrilled with the halogen projectors on those. The HIDs on the 2017 I have now seem much better.

My 2014 SLT has an early production date of June 2013. Only 2 issues: Outside air temp sensor replaced and an issue with the adjustable pedals not working....and that's it. So to the OP, your safe with a '14.

I own a 2014 High country with 118,000 miles. Been a great pickup and only major thing I've done was replace the radiator and thermostat. Besides doing regular maintenance I'm curious on how many miles I can get out of it. I've gotten the easy mods done (Kooks headers, Corsa sport, intake, and black bear tune) now saving for cam and Whipple supercharger. I also owned a 14 ltz and put around 40k on that one without any issues. I personally like the 14-15 style better than the 16-17, just my opinion.

My 14 just passed 50k with no issues other than it needs rear shocks now and brakes soon, but those are wear items. I think what the OP was going for was worries with the first year of a new model, not all the bugs have been worked out that only show up in the real world. Those kinds of issues are few and far between on these trucks.

My 14 has 47k miles on it right now and I have had no real issues. A few minor ones fixed under warranty but I would buy another GMC based off how this truck has done.

AH I see I assumed the LTZ's were just as bad as the GMC's... I had a '14 GMC it was really lousy even after the 'update'. I now have a '16 Silverado and the HID's are a big upgrade.

in the us there is a stop sell on all 14's from gm dealerships.. So good luck trying to buy one lol

Why is that?

A recall on the electric steering. A reprogram needs to be done but apparently a software update hasnt been released.

Damn. Not starting out too good. Put a deposit on the thing but haven't paid or taken delivery. This grounds for backing out? Can they still deliver? Will suck to have the truck for a week and have to drop it off for a day right away.

I bought a my '14 with a stop sale, I eventually emailed them and said look, I need a vehicle, I understand there is a recall. Can I simply write you a disclaimer acknowledging that I understand the risks involved and will take it to a dealer as soon as possible. It went something like "I hereby place no liability on "x dealership" for any problems, injuries, or safety issues that may occur related to the recall"

They accepted and I got my truck, took it in for the seatbelt recall like a year later lol.

It’s not about getting the truck for me in a rush. For me it’s that I was a bit concerned about it being a first year redesign and being out of bumper to bumper (CPO is only 3mo/5000km in Canada). Seeing that there were quite a few recalls already on the truck, as well as posts about AC issues, shaking issues and a few other things. I was trying to gauge its reliability by posting about my concerns and while the feedback was good and raised my confidence. A recall being issued before I have taken delivery isn’t exactly confidence inspiring.

Part of it is I worry about big purchases. Part of it is I love my current mid-size truck which is perfect for my needs other than payload and tow rating, as well is I still have 10 months of bumper to bumper on my current truck. I can probably get past the towing rating and payload by either renting a truck when needed or by not taking the travel trailer out of the area it is currently in.

I bought my 2014 used when it had 38k miles in February... have 46k now 5 months later. Mine was lifted when it was purchased and I take it on 150 mile road trips all the time and recently took it to Missouri from Texas without any issues. As long as it was maintained well you should be good. On these forums you only see the small percentage of people that have problems to try and resolve them... the other 99% that don't have problems don't need to post and talk about anything with their truck... just to put that into prospective

Yeah so I picked it up. So far so good though I haven't put a pile of mileage on it. I did take it out to the lake on the weekend and got close to 21 mpg. As long as it's reliable I'm happy.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
