Slow shift on 4L60E

Recommended Posts

Howdy

I've got a '98 Chevy K1500 with a 5.7 and the 4L60E. I bought the truck a few months ago with 183,000 miles. The past owner had changed the fluid and filter about 20,000 miles ago. (With documentation). Ever since I've been driving the truck, it's slow to shift into reverse and drive. There's no slipping once it's in gear. It just takes a second or two for it to engage either reverse or 1st. No shifting problems after that. I wouldn't be surprised if the trans was on it's way out, any suggestions?

There is much debate on the topic, and no real clear cut and dry answer, but many people say that replacing the transmission fluid can cause the transmission to develop problems. As for your reverse issue, there is only really two things you can check. If by chance your transmission does have a vacuum line attached to it, check that for leaks. It has to do with the reverse function. Other than that, check the trans fluid level. There is not much else you can do.

Had same trany in my 96 5.7 Vortec 350 Tahoe, that I changed valve body at 30K with B&M to include their racing fluid...

I would change fluid and filter every 50K up to 248,000 when I finally sold it.

From about 200K, had slow shifting when trans was cold, ( with last 7 years in cold winter Iowa) and sometimes reverse issues, but once it was at operationg temp,, would up-shift decently..

I do "also" recommend vacuum line and fluid checks to insure no leaks and zero burnt fluid..

As I was original owner of Tahoe,, I new how trans was treated,, with no burn-outs or abuse..

Early abuse will shorten overall lifespan...

Recommend do basic maintenance and trans flush to keep it running with good Valvoline or similar trans fluid..

Cheers---K

No doubt it's worn. You could probably get by having the line pressure increased with a tune. Might cure it. Even when new they often had a little lag, figured it was GMs way of trying to keep people from breaking the thing, especially the weak sun shell

Soft / delayed shifting, is caused by poor line pressure rise due to a leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably remove and rebuild needed.

Here's some pictures on locations and what stuff is:
