Common GMT900 Issues

I posted this here because I'm sure the techs on here have seem plenty of common issues with gmt900s..anyways I'm helping a buddy try to find a truck and he's looking at an 09 Sierra, with the 5.3.

Front sway bar links, if its got the factory brake controller the relay and fuse like to go bad, early AFM trucks may have oil consumption issues on 5.3 and 6.0 (many solved with new valve cover, others not so much), AFM lifter failure, wheelhouse rust, rocker rust, bed rust, low beam headlight failure (damn DRL), upper ball joints if its been leveled, fuel senders rot out, fuel pump flow control module and the dreaded EVAP vent valve. Those are the most common I've seen at work (except the AFM deal, we put pistons in two trucks since I've been here).

My '07 Silverado is bone stock body wise, and my lower ball joints failed at 38k. Interior has squeaked and rattled louder than either of my '93 or '86 model vehicles since it had 2k on the clock. Front diff. seals started leaking around 40k. Became an oil burner at 50k. Also around that time, my upper ball joints, hub bearings, and one strut failed. 4x4 switch was an ongoing problem right off the showroom floor that GM passed the buck on - I got stuck fixing that when it finally completely crapped out at 60k. Now the truck cannot pass MA state inspection because the damn monitors for EVAP and o2 won't run.

 

I'd highly recommend anything built before 1996, and no way would I recommend ANY GM trucks built after '06. I think their last great truck was the GMT-400. Might not have the power of the new ones in stock form, but that can be dealt with - at least they'll run reliably for 300k+ with regular maintenance.

 

I haven't even made it to 92K with my '07 Silverado, and my cam bearings are failing ...

Oh boy lol, I can't really tell whats what on it besides what little the online add mentions..it appears to be somewhat modded, like blacked out with tow mirrors
