Driving with Disconnected ABS/Wheel Sensor

Recommended Posts

So i got beat by my front wheel bearing. after 4 hours of struggling to get the old bearing removed im throwing in the towel. Monday I am going to bring it to the auto mechanic.. and i’m sure he is going to ding me hard for “rescue work”.

in the process of trying to remove the bearing assembly i damaged the wheel speed sensor. Ive disconnected it and am wondering if it would be safe to drive the 2 miles it would take to get to the auto shop. I would imagine there would be no issues (other than no ABS of course) but wanted to ask here first.

The vehicle is a 2010 Sierra 4x4

Thanks!

So the hub is still attached or did you finally get it off and then put it back on?  Even if you reused the old nut and didn't torque everything down with a torque wrench I reckon you'll be fine driving just a couple of miles of slow city driving.

The hub is still attached. The concern i have is the abs speed sensor is gone. I just wanted to make sure my brakes dont go crazy on me while i am driving down the road.

Can you tell me what happened to cause you to have so much problems getting it out? Maybe I can help you get it out. Maybe it is something you're missing. Is it just rusted in or something?

Just rusted stuck i believe. Only 3 bolts and the axel nut holding it on right?

i used a hammer, heat (mapp gas), air chisel and it didnt work.

i even wedged a piece of steel between the wheel bearing hub and a solid part of the frame and used the power steering to try and pop it off. All it did was mangle the piece of steel but wouldnt budge the wheel bearing bearing hub.

Your regular brakes will work fine with the ABS sensor disconnected.  It will be safe to drive.

Thanks!

Your brakes will work fine without the ABS sensor.  Also, the mechanic shouldn’t ding you if you damaged the sensor as the new wheel bearing/hub assembly comes with a wheel speed sensor intact so no harm done.

if you still have some drive left, try heat cycling the hub assembly a few times with your torch.  That may help the rust pop off.  But yes, this is a tough job and even with the right tools such as an air chisel and a hammer, it’s not trivial, even for an experienced mechanic.  Rust is a PITA.
