Factory Accessorie GM wheel locks "KEY" splitting in half

2015i GMC 2500HD,

Anyone have any problems with the factory GM lock KEY? Took the truck in to the Chevrolet dealer for inspection and ask to have the tires rotated. They said when I picked it up that the lock "KEY" split in half when they tried to take off the rims... they are the only ones that have used the key so they gave me new locks/key today free of charge.

Only thing I can think of is they used an air gun on the key/locks and it just had enough?

I'm pretty sure that's what they did. The way they have been designed, (I'm not sure when McGard came up w/ them) they are meant to be snugged up/removed w/ a ratchet not an impact.

Yep they used a impact which they are not supposed to do.

I work at McGard

The key is pressed into the body on a big press they are designed to take a certain level of torque then give if the mechanic goes above that then they will shear at knurl inside or the cloverleaf pattern will shear off.

Designed to be used with OEM lug wrench not impact.

So they make them to take 140ft/lbs of torque but no more?  That is ridiculous !!  Who removes lugnuts with the tire iron unless you have a flat at the side of the road?  I will be removing the locknuts and upgrading to better lugnuts, the GM ones are only good for a few on and offs  before looking like crap anyway.  If I was really worried about someone stealing my wheels I would relocate!!?
