GM ASEP Program

Ask most GM techs with some years on them. They will say same. GM has made everything from just fixing a car to trying to get paid an enormous headache. Extremely difficult to earn a descent living. Add to that the long term affects on your body. Just read a post on a GM corporate forum from a guy who went through ASEP with 16 other guys. None of the 16 are at dealerships anymore.  And don't get me started on the $50k in tools you would need. Get a degree. Do something else.

My son was a GM tech at a dealer. No ASEP program then I think.

He had $18 k in tools I think, maybe more. His last Snap-on scanner was $5 k.

He went to an independent shop.

He was a mechanic for 20+ years.

Has back trouble and hands.

Not wrenching anymore.

I went through asep 90-92. Spent 3 years full time at the dealer after graduating. One day in yr 4 realized that I couldnt do this for another 40 years and was at the top pay wise.
Went back to school and got an egineering degree. Best decision I ever made.
Like someone else said, get a degree and do something else.

Still have my tools and have paid very little over the years on car repairs, only good thing about those 5 -6 years.
