2018 silverado

well i was in Tulsa for work this week and they had truck at the rental car facility, they had a 2018 silverado LT i thought i would get it to compare to my 2014, the truck was new only had 23 miles on it, after 3 days i have decided that i would rather have my 14 than an 18, it didn't drive anywhere near as good as mine, already had a few rattles, noticed when going over railroad tracks. it had the 5.3 as mine does but didn't feel near as strong as mine.  in other words i was really disappointed with it. i was expecting much more

There are so many factors other than the year of vehicle that come into play in this situation.  I would not conclude that '14's are better, worse or different than '18's from such a comparison.  Reading about the variety of new vehicle experiences posted on this forum  suggests there are differences in ride within same year and trim level trucks!  If I was shopping for a '18 my expectation would be that it rides the same as my '15 with a fresh start on the odometer!  I wouldn't buy the one that rattles or feels sluggish on the test drive.

yeah i was surprised as it was exactly the same trim as mine LT Z71. i am not saying the 14's are better just sayin i would rather have mine than the one i rented

The suspension will be stiffer (I am guessing that is what you meant by didn't drive as good?) since it is not worn out at all. Rattles can be a rogue hit or miss, certainly wouldn't chalk that up to a 2018 thing. The motor wasn't even broken in or the ECU has been learning at all, in 5-10k miles I am sure it would have felt just as strong as yours does currently.

Personally the only think the 2018's have that I would want would be the locking tailgate. The other feature I want isn't even offered (adaptive cruise control), other than that I prefer the 2014 style and the headlights weren't in any way shape or form a game changer, my stock lights are great (though I have the reflector lenses).

Did both trucks have the same gear ratio?  That one may have had a 3.08 where yours maybe a 3.42.  I haven't kept up but don't all the newer ones have 8 speed transmissions?  If so then that could make a difference in how you felt it performed compared to your truck.

Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but I've always felt like my rental trucks felt detuned, or they just have a super high gear ratio.

I test drove a local 2017 V6 with 3.08 then drove 4 hours to purchase a 2017 V8 with 3.42 in the same overall spec and the power difference "felt" marginal.A little more torque on the 1-2 shift because of the larger displacement and steeper gearing but after that it was a toss up.These were both RCSB 2WD 6speed trucks which are a few tenths faster than the new 8speed that some of the higher trim level trucks have.As far as suspension goes off the lot they are always hard as a rock especially in Regular Cabs but do get alot softer within the first 1000 miles.

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
