I was definitely not implying that everyone knows how to up here.  People crash and idiots do get hurt.  Its not hard to be safe and it can be done with 2WD or 4WD.  4WD is easier to deal with and makes the truck more useful in low traction situations, whatever they might be.  I know up here 4WD trucks have a better resale value and are easier to sell.

True story: Here in upstate NY the lake affect machine has been running hard since Christmas Eve and so far dumped about 4 feet for about a 50 mile stretch on rte 81.

Was driving to family dinner Christmas day and passed a guy who had been plowing a parking lot and missed the driveway to the road and put it into a 4 foot deep ditch. His partner in the second truck was laughing like an idiot.

The wife sitting next to me who gave up cursing when we started having grand kids (yells at me all the time) looked over at them and said "what a dip-shit". No special knowledge  or skills up here.
