Questions for Catch Can users

I have a 2016 Silverado with a 5.3 V8 that I just purchased last week with 15,000 mi on it. I've read up extensively about the need for a catch can on these trucks.  With that said, I've read most on the UPR kit and the Elite Engineering kit.

 

So, my questions:

 

1) First off, which catch can do you prefer?

 

2) Most common mounting position seems to be at the brake position, does this interfere with use of the oil dipstick when trying to check oil level?

 

3) I've read on here of some noise if using weak hose.  Do the stronger braided hoses alleviate noise/performance issues?

 

4) Finally, do you use the clean side separator?  I've been in email contact with both Elite and UPR.....one says yes, you should use it, the other says on these trucks it's really not much of a benefit.

I have the Elite EX-2 I believe with the big can and ball valve with clean side separator.  It has performed Excellent for me I live in warm climate and mounted off the front where fans and coolers mount.  Mine is super easy to reach and see when allowing it to pour out.  I can't speak for other locations other than if it gets very cold where you live better keep it and the lines snug as close to engine.  I do you use clean side separator and it has kept my intake tube and Throttle body 100% dry nothing at all @ 45K!  So I have nothing but good things to say about Elite's product!  It's already a mess in the combustion chamber with GDI so I didn't want to be making it worse as the process itself is going to be adding in the injectors fouling/plugs etc...Than even more fuel going into crankcase...etc.  Nope not for me I can't speak about UPR.

 

Guy I worked with got one it looked nice the hoses were big and plug and play etc.  He hooked it up and well he is not all impressed of what it is catching....He may not even have it hooked up correctly not sure?

Did you use the stock rubber hose?  Any noise issues or performance issues with the hoses themselves?

2) Most common mounting position seems to be at the brake position, does this interfere with use of the oil dipstick when trying to check oil level? - I actually mounted mine in the empty battery tray on the drivers side.

 

3) I've read on here of some noise if using weak hose.  Do the stronger braided hoses alleviate noise/performance issues? - I've experienced this with the hose i was provided by Elite. It makes a hissing noise.

I have the elite dual system with clean side separator. Rubber hoses with ck valves no issue I have it mounted where 2 nd battery would ho and yes in very cold weather I do get alot of condensarion / water I live in canada so damm cold but works well gor me 2017 6.2 esp when towing

I just drained mine yesterday and it looked like Chocolate Milk lol

I live in Nebraska.....so doesn't get as cold as where you are, but it does get darn cold here in the winters. Other than the condensation, do you have any issues with lines freezing up at all in winter?  I'd prefer to mount in same location as you for ease of access, but think maybe I should keep everything closer to the engine block.

I'm in Maryland and with the recent cold snap I had no issues. One thing I did note was some of the contents of my Catch Can froze probably because of the mounting location and lack of heat.

Yes, All from Elite no problems at all or noises, drips etc.  I would mount yours closer to the engine block.  Use a wide mouth Gatorade bottle to catch the fluid too it will not make a mess.  You can get it with smaller opening like plastic water bottle but it's PITA....Get a 32OZ Gatorade bottle and your good for 1 year!

Get it w/o the clean side, try it out and see how good it works. Hissing isnt an issue, not like you can hear it from outside the truck.

It collects lots of gunk. Get the bigger can if you dont want to empty it often. 

I might think about drilling the bottom of mine to install a small valve, should male it easier to drain and quick.

The brake location makes me leery that the dipstick is hard to access/use.  But I'm assuming its not an issue.

I have a v1 elite catch can and stock rubber hoses. No real noise that I can hear in the cab. I mounted mine in the extra battery tray because I read that mounting it on the brake booster cause vibration issues.

That's where I'd like to mount but I'm concerned about cold weather being an issue

I have never had it freeze up on me and had one in last truck too. I just think when mounted away from engine it forms more condensation / water  in can only sunce it cools then gets hot under long  drives esp since new trucks have grille shutters they are closed on higheay in cold weather   The stip and go in vold weather is where the condensation forms IMO

 

 The extra wayer in can does  not effect engine as it stays there 

 

Im in AZ for winter now and back to normal oil collection  no extra water vapor chocolate milk

I live in Iowa and never had an issue even when the temps were in the negatives.
