Questions for Catch Can users

2016 Silverado 5.3 with Elite e2-x mounted on brake booster.
2017 Tahoe 5.3 with e2-x mounted in spare battery location.
Both driven in similar manners and distances. Located in eastern Iowa.

Tahoe is a lot easier to access for drainage since it's closer to the front of the vehicle. Noticeably fills faster. Have to use a shallow container to drain into as it is right over the battery tray.

Silverado requires leaning into the bay more, but doesn't have as much water in the contents during winter. Also can grab nearly any available container to drain into as there is nothing under the can but open space.

Dipstick access is not an issue on either location. Both locations have pros/cons. Just pick whichever you prefer.

So most of you guys seem to have the E2-X vs. the E2.  Is that mostly for the drain valve at the bottom?

I believe the e2x is different internals as well that’s supposed to catch more. I’m running the e2x ultra and clean side seperator.

Nice picture......I think I'm gonna go with the E2-X.

 

Do you ever have to (or have the desire) to disassemble the E2-X for inspection/cleaning?

I’ve only had the can on for about 1,000 miles so far. Just hit 2000 miles on the truck, I drained it with the valve on bottom before. Have not ever opened the can nor do I think I will.

The Clean Side Separator is only beneficial if you're on the gas a lot such as towing or just fast driving. Otherwise, you're pulling vacuum which always will go through the PCV system which will pull from the intake manifold. Mounting near the brake booster will keep it hot enough for the condensation to evaporate and go back into the induction system (which is fine). That way the can won't fill up quite as fast either. I have the E2 without the CSS and it does a great job. I wasn't a fan of the pedcock valve on the bottom of the X cans as it's just another place for a possible leak.

Great info so far. Anyone have any input on the pros/cons of the rubber hose vs braided hose? If going with braided hose, you guys buy through elite engineering or other sites? $58 seems steep for some braided hose.

1) First off, which catch can do you prefer? - I have the Elite Catch Can and it works flawlessly. 

 

2) Most common mounting position seems to be at the brake position, does this interfere with use of the oil dipstick when trying to check oil level? - I actually mounted mine in the empty battery tray on the drivers side.

 

3) I've read on here of some noise if using weak hose.  Do the stronger braided hoses alleviate noise/performance issues? - I've experienced this with the hose i was provided by Elite. It makes a hissing noise. 

 

4) Finally, do you use the clean side separator?  I've been in email contact with both Elite and UPR.....one says yes, you should use it, the other says on these trucks it's really not much of a benefit. - I have it.

 

I've got the hissing noise with the hose they provided too, and a little bit of ovaling in the house when the truck is running. Didn't you ever replace yours?

In the battery location just for ease of checking and draining.  In cold climates, the booster location would seem to be better because of engine heat keeping the condensate moving.

1.  I like the one I have: ebay ADD W1 replica for $40.  Pulled 2-3oz out already in less than 500 miles.

 

2.  I made a bracket from metal stock to mount on the brake booster bolt.  I have no problems with dipstick access.

 

3.  NAPA/Carquest transmission line is more than adequate.  I went to my local hose shop (you probably have one too) and got some gray cloth braided line for about the same cost ($4/ft).  Their trans line was $2/ft but the line I got looked and felt killer.  I had to have it.  Basically, check your local hose shop first.

 

4.   Since I put on a CAI, I was curious about the 'clean side' tubes reverting oil back into the intake tract.  I've checked the inside of the tubing several times, including after several 0-80 WOT blasts in succession.  I also tow regularly.  Not a smidgen of oil in the tubing or on throttle body.  Because of that, I believe the clean side separator is not necessary (for me anyway).

    • 2026 3500HD.  Mostly empty. Grocery getter. What tire pressure are you running for 37x12.50x20. I have 37x12.50R20 Toyo Open  Country RT pro and been running around 55 lbs front and rear and it's too much. Tires are wearing more in the middle. Toyo says 45 front and 50 rear. Chalk test and it's still too much. I lowered it to 40 front 44 rear see what happens. 
    • Enjoy the new truck, it’s a beauty. I’m glad you’re keeping the OBS, I love those old trucks. 
    • With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece. 
    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
