Coated Header

So, I'm waiting on my kooks setup, guess there's a 2 week backorder on the catted y. The retailer I purchased from says they can get the headers coated for me. Which is an added bonus, because I get free shipping from them even though its coming from kooks/across the border. I did a search and couldn't find any info on coated headers. Anyone have experience with Jet-Hot? Pro's/Con's, what does kooks say about coatings? Only reason I'd be doing it is to knock down the under hood temps, or is that not a concern?

I don't know if it's still the case, but some years back the ceramic coated Hooker Headers were done by Jet-Hot. I have a set on my 79 K10 and they're holding up pretty well.

Thanks. I've heard arguments for and against coated headers. And both make sense...

 

Coated reduces underhood temps, keeps the stainless looking good longer, and apparently speeds up exhaust velocity because more heat remains in the pipe. On the other side. Coated headers can flake, if the coating on the inside of the headers flake it'll plug up the cat and eventually cause it to fail. More heat retained in the pipe effects the structural integrity of the metal, especially over time with repeated hot/cold cycles. Some people swear by coated headers others you couldn't pay them to use them. Not an easy decision when its split down the middle like this.

 

For those of you with headers, are the underhood temps an issue? have you had to install heat shields to protect the starter/wiring etc?
