Can't burnout

Check your RPO codes in the glove box if you see what that says G80 then you have a G80 locker and word of a advise they are a low designed for low speed and you CAN damage them your rear end...

If you have a 3.73 you probably have a max tow truck and that means G80.... Burn out if you want to find out what the insides of your rear end look like laying outside on the parking lot... G80's are not meant for doing burnouts, they're low speed traction devices, burn outs are their blood enemies...

Old video but still true since the design of the G80 Eaton locker has remained the same since its inception.

All those paws, pins, etc are not meant to hold up to repeated high speed burnouts. It will be ok for a few but burn out often, even on gravel, and BOOM!

That said I have a 97 k1500 with 14 bolt semi float rear axle and G80. Over 200k and no problems. Never done a burnout but lots of G80 engagements in snow and off roading. These were all low speed engagements, not full throttle trying to burn out.

If you want to do burn outs you kinda need an LSD not a Locker....

I had a rear end go out once. I used to burn out, off road mud bog'n, driving through deep salt water that was above the vent tube, etc. One day I noticed that the vehicle was "surging" as though someone was lightly applying and then letting up on the brake when I was driving. I pulled over and check everything under the rig visually. When I got back int he rig, it went forward about a foot, and the rear tires locked up. I backed up about a foot and the rear tires locked up. I could only drive forwards and backwards one foot! Well, sometime ya got to do what ya got to do. I put the transfer case in 4 low, dropped the transmission into 1st, and floored the shit out of it. KA-BANG! The rear end blew up. I put it in 4 high, and drove it home. It sounded like a handful of rocks inside a coffee can, inside of a clothes dryer. By the time I mad it home, there were several puncture holes in the differential case, and gear oil was leaking out everywhere. I traded a used vacuum cleaner for a complete rear axle out of another truck. Bolted it up and I was good to go.

Not a burn out but when I purchased my truck new I could never get the rear tires to break loose for a few seconds when I mashed the gas. 

 

Had Justin at Blackbear tune it for me and remove some torque management.  What a difference.  You just can't beat a personal tune. Now if I mashed the gas the tires will break loose for a few seconds and away I go.

 

Not a burnout but at least I can tell I'm getting more power to the ground now.  Not bad for an such an old 5.3 compared to today's new power-plants.  Also this was with factory size tires and running BFG's K2 A/T's

same here my trucks tuned and all that fun stuff, no need for brake stands it burns out just touching the gas. but mines built.

I guess I do have the g80 lol.  I guess I won't try to do burn outs. I can chirp the tires and it chirps in 2nd gear sometimes. Has decent amount of balls but oh well guess I'll get me another camaro for the burnouts later. lol

    • My post above is the direct reason for my outsized interest in keeping what I have for as long as possible. My memory isn't as short as some. 
    • I don't think so. 😏 Cars? Our experience will diverge there as well. I was buying cars with 200K (1970's) when I started and quite a few were pretty solid cars. Kids in my county were not allowed to wear long pants if they couldn't rebuild and repair every part of that beast.    I will agree that many parts are now better. Alternators and charging systems are an envy. But I replaced few water pumps or power steering pumps then. Rebuilt carburetors but replaced few. Mufflers are another place of OEM improvement. Stainless?     • The thermometer has been in my wife's 2008 envoy, my sons 2016 chevy, my friends 2020 1500 silverado all showing cooler readings. It's not the guage.
    • Have a question concerning trim levels. Ive not bought a new vehicle since 2006, and I have decided on a 2500 gmc pro or silverado custom. For anyone that has one of these 2 trim levels have you regretted not stepping up to the LT or SLE. I look at things as the more electronics the more problems to arise. I love the look of the old school gauges on the dash as well. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. 
    • If that guage has a way to adjust [hex on bottom], put that thing in a glass full of ice, put water in, put your gage in, let it sit for 3 minutes or so, and set it to 33 degrees.
