Oil Recommendation

Hi I’m new to this site, and there’s a lot of great info here. I hope that I’m posting this in the correct area, but I was wondering if Delo XLE 400 synthetic blend 10w-30 works in a 12’ GMC Sierra 5.3. It’s API SN certified and synthetic blend. I know they say dexos only but it has an SN rating and I also have boxes of the stuff. I’m a diesel mechanic and I’ve been pretty happy with delo in the fleet. I guess I’m asking is dexos and API SN the same?

Dexos and SN rating are two different things as the link above shows.

If you are out of warranty you can run it no problem.

Yea I’m out of warranty, and the 10w30 vs 5w30 isn’t going to make a difference in South Carolina, it doesn’t get cold enough. I was just curious if the rating were the same, I know dexos is GM’s testing standards and it has a lot to do with aeration in the oil. Thanks for the replies.

There is a difference and any oil that is dexos rated is a higher quality oil than those that are not.  It is a tougher standard that GM implemented to help with  various areas like oxidation control, shear stability, wear protection, piston cleanliness, aeration control, sludge control and a few others.

I agree that the dexos standard is different or better, but the manual says 10w30 is fine in warmer climates as long as it meets the standards. My question was if API SN was the same and it is not so I’ll stick with the havooine full synthetic line, our oil supplier is a chevron dealer so all of our products are through them. Thank you all for clearing up the dexos vs API ratings, because everything I read about it didn’t give a clear answer. People were saying they ran Rotella 5w40 in there engine, etc. I also read from one site that if it’s synthetic it meets dexos standards. So I was just trying to clear up the bs about it.

Does Oil Can Henry’s carry dexos-licensed oils?

There's a clue. Dexos is a LICENSE not a specification. A specification is something developed in the lab. A license is something that happens at a dinner party where money changes hands above the table. :lol:A major without a Dexos license can still afford to send his kids to college.

Chevron supplies about half the Dexos licensed brands raw materials. You think they could muster the ability to qualify for a license? Just say'n, they aren't drinking the GM tea.

It is a licensed specification. I might have misunderstood your post but it is a specification that is also licensed.

I talked to our supplier from chevron today and he assured me that the delo meets all new standards, including dexos, he’s a salesman so he could’ve been just selling it. He said that he can order havolines full synthetic line if I wanted it to say dexos on the bottle. ?

GM can approve any API spec they chose but they have no power to create a separate spec. Any spec they license is already an approved API spec. The Dexos license is a written assurance that some required spec is met. That anyone needs to be paid to make an assurance they can receive for free by reading both the GM standard and the bottle is beyond me. It's the reason API classification labels exist. What a racket.  So yes, it is a spec that GM gets companies to pay them a license fee to put a label on a bottle. It works as people are so gullible and lazy they need a program to legend the program.

Looks like GM is attempting an end run around the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

The thinking behind dexos

So greed it is then. To do that did they thing far enough ahead to buy a refinery and blending unit of their own or did they think a company like Exxon/Mobil would cater only to them? Note is says 'specify an OIL not a SPECIFICATION'?

Liars and words. Good grief Charlie Brown. Imagine a world where Mobil 1 which is Dexos certified telling people of other makes that this oil will ruin their motors!! :loser:  Like I said before and attempted end run around the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

I imagine the conclusion would be, if you change your own oil and have an engine failure be ready for push back if you can’t produce proof you used approved oil. Especially if you’re running a cylinder deactivation engine.
