Hi, I'm pretty new to this forum so not sure if this is the right area to post this . I have a 2014 standard cab short bed with a 12 bolt single trac rear. What posi unit should

I get for this? It has a 9.5 ring if that matters. I'm putting a Whipple 2.9 on it so not sure if factory unit is strong enough or not. Any knowledge on this is much appreciated. THANKS

TrueTrac is the way to go. G80 won’t last if you’re doing burnouts and donuts. Add 4.10 gears and you’re set.

I may be wrong on this but as I recall:

If the axle is equipped with a factory posi already you will need an open carrier in addition to the TrueTrac.

The TrueTrac or any other aftermarket posi must be installed in an open carrier.

Might be totally off on this one - been over 20 years since I tore into differentials.  Hope it works out.

No the new carrier of his choice will be just that, a complete carrier.  My vote for a truck with power is a Detroit Locker.  The Trutrac is kind of meh.... much like the OEM Gov lock but at least it will not explode when you try to take off hard.  I have a Trutrac in my one trucks front diff.... it's okay for a front mounted unit allowing you to turn and drives honestly like an open differential which is why people love it so much. I practice what I preach, I own 4 GM trucks all equipped with Detroit No Spin lockers including my 2017 Sierra 2500HD.  Most of what you read or will hear about them is heresay from people that have never owned or driven one.

Agreed but I don't think there is a Detroit Locker option for the 9.5 yet.

I believe you just use the carrier for the 9.5" 14 bolt regardless.

With any of the older 9.5" units he'll need to swap to 14 bolt gears and get the correct bearings to make it fit, as well as an aftermarket diff cover or spacer.  This can be done (I think CATaylor had it done by East Coast Gear with a Trutrac) but you really need to know what you're doing.  If I remember correctly, the 14-bolt gears have a smaller pinion shaft so you may be giving up some strength as well.

If he wants to keep his current gears or stick to stock-style 12-bolt gears, the G80/Gov-loc had been the only option until recently.  It looks like Yukon has just added their Dura Grip posi for the newer 12-bolts:   https://www.randysworldwide.com/product/ydggm9-5-4-33-12b/

That would be a better choice than the G80 for street/racing, etc.  For offroad I wouldn't spend the money to replace a G80.  I'm not a big fan of the G80, but I'm not a big fan of regular posi units for offroad either.  If you don't already have the G80, it is another choice at about the same cost which is nice to see.

Thanks for all the input. I will consider  all of it and try to make a decision. The yukon looks like a viable option that is better than G80

Thanks for the info! I may try to hold out a little longer. There are enough of these trucks that we should have more than 2 options. Would really love a wave lock or a Detroit Locker that doesn’t have to be a “custom” install.
