Chris45 Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Hi all. I’m new! I have a 2015 suburban that has coolant “disappearing”. Had to the dealer 2-3 times, they pressure test and find nothing. I’m really frustrated! I just had to add coolant to it. Any suggestions...?
newdude Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Any coolant around the perimeter head bolts?
Chris45 Posted September 1, 2018 Author Posted September 1, 2018 I personally haven’t looked but now that you bring it up, I’ll check it this afternoon. Just pull off the plastic covers to see head bolts correct?
Sierra Dan Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 With the '14 Silverado and Sierra, some radiators were cracking on the sides where aluminum and plastic meet. Engine coolant was seeping/venting out. It was an obvious smell in the front grille area and the reservoir would go down below the cold fill mark. Happened to mine and dealer replaced radiator. It was caused by a cycling thermostat. All was updated to new parts. There is a TSB out there regarding the issue.
Chris45 Posted September 1, 2018 Author Posted September 1, 2018 Thanks Sierra Dan! With that leak, did the truck leave any fluid on the driveway/ground?
Supreme Pizza Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Pull the transmission dipstick and make sure its not ending up in there.
Chris45 Posted September 1, 2018 Author Posted September 1, 2018 Ok Starman. Just to clarify, the theory is that the coolant is getting in there from a leak internally in the radiator, between the engine coolant tanks, and transmission lines
Supreme Pizza Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 Its unlikely, but it is possible. Any time I see an unexplained coolant loss, I start there. If you catch it quick enough, you can save the transmission. That problem is MUCH more common on Nissans though. Drive it around the block, and pull the transmission dip stick. Is the fluid over full, or cloudy?
Chris45 Posted September 1, 2018 Author Posted September 1, 2018 great! thanks for the tip. When the wife gets home, ill go out and do just that.
mjm-1957 Posted September 2, 2018 Posted September 2, 2018 Changing alot of radiators lately for cracked side tanks. The TSB says to replace the thermostat at the same time to prevent thermocycling .Take a look at the tanks on yours.
Chris45 Posted September 2, 2018 Author Posted September 2, 2018 Any particular place on the tanks? Meaning, do they appear to be cracking in one spot more than another?
