64 Malibu 283 I bought with about 130K on the clock. Now that one used oil. A quart per tank. Leaked trans fluid and took a band adjustment once a week. It was a pretty car. 65 Ford 352 would throw off the first quart of it's six and then not a drop afterward. Second 352 used none between 2 K changes and you had to tap the oil pressure gauge to make sure it was working. Bad cam bearings. Used car. Toyota Peso bought new used about a quart in 1,000 starting around 100K but ran to 300K. Never did smoke. Pennzoil motor. :lol: It was the only motor we had that used oil that we bought new and the only motor that ever ran Pennzoil. (Pre Shell). Only car in five plus decades of driving and maintaining bought new that ever did use any oil at all. Most of my used cars were not offenders but the ones that were....beat....overheated and miss used silly cars before I bought them. I knew it when I did. Rebuilt them or sold for part for more than the buy price. 

 

There's a few more but none that used. 72 Toyota. 2 actually now that I think of it. One had a 22R...nice motor Bikes to many to count. Two used a bit of oil. Both pre 60 Brit twins beat to death when I got them. One Honda CB 600 that leaked something awful. No history. Bought and sold in a month. 50's 500 Royal Enfield used oil silly until I fixed the PCV system then a few ounces between changes. Never enough to 'top off'. 90% of my bikes were oil tight and used none. Almost all were bought new or very low mile uints where I knew and rode with the owners. Oh, the 76 Superglide used oil like I owned an oil well. Literally the AMF Strike year bike. Bought new. Bike delivered with faulty oil rings, warped valves and missing third gear shift fork.  Use none after the rebuild. 

 

 

 

 

Were you using Red Line oil in all these vehicles?

Just thinking that may have been the difference due to the low NOAK of that oil.

I started using Red Line about 1998 when I bought the first Civic. Mobil 1 before that for maybe eight to ten years? I still use Quaker State UD in my 'salt cars' and garage queens that see 3K service a year and 2X changes. Except long term storage. Then still Red Line.  

 

Remember NOACK is a 482 F test for an HOUR. Bearing temperatures are about 75 F over you sump oil temperature. Pistons today often have oil spray cooing. Cams are rollers. blocks and heads alloy. Cooling systems large. Not much to get that hot in a normally asperated motor anymore. Coolers for all those before the modern period. 212F has been my hard sump ceiling for 40 years. Mid to upper 190's preferred.

 

I am mystified by GM's use of 207 F thermostats in Ecotec3 motors whose lubrication cooling is carried out in large part by the radiator and hindered by less than useless thermostat deployment. Especially since in their own upper tier vehicles those same motors sill have 182 F Thermostats in them. So it isn't for emissions is it?

 

Now all that said. A low NOACK doesn't hurt a thing. :thumbs:

I was just wondering because I have  used major brand oils always and Fram oil filters for years. Started using fleet oil filters about 10 years ago.

I have used dino oil until I bought my 2012 Sierra in Nov. of 2015. Then I started using synthetic blends(Quaker State) in this truck to meet OEM spec.

I switched the Honda over to synthetic blend also.

As I said I won't buy expensive oil or filters.

 

I will be switching the truck and the Accord over to full synthetic (Castrol Magnatec) soon.

I have been a GM man for years but I have a 2015 chevy 2500hd 6.0 that started using a quart of oil under 200 miles. It only has 58870 mi. No leaks no smoke.

Allot has happened in the last two years since my last post to this thread. I assume the normal things have been checked like plugged PCV system? Major leaks?  

 

 

Yea, rings are stuck or sticking. Try TRIAX S7 at a 5:1 ratio for 1,500 miles then hot drop and fill/filter. This is a concentrated  detergent/dispersant not a solvent.

 

A solvent like BG EPR can improve it but not solve it. Ditto GM top end soak. It's past the dilution in solution phase. 

 

If you have success with this, and you should, and have been changing oil on intervals longer than 3,000 miles...stop that. If you think your oil should go longer than that...stop...look at your truck....did it? 

 

If it doesn't work...rebuild

Now 2022, I bought a 2018 Silverado in 2019. Used it little due to owning (2) varied year Avalanches, an Equinox and an RV built on a 3500 Express Van chassis. 

 

I have done oil changes on my and other vehicles as a homeowner/hobby guy and have NEVER seen the oil consumption I am experiencing on the 2018 Silverado. 

 

I did not realize the "disclaimer" by GM for vehicles that normal (??) consumption can be 2000 miles/quart? Like others stated....REALLY? 

 

I'm not a fan of synthetic oil and like most am being directed in that path for most oil changes to include on the older vehicles but 0-20W just doesn't seem right no matter the tolerances on modern engines. 

 

Stopping at a local Chevy dealership, I was told of the 2000 miles normal consumption. Looking on line within an hour I see the same thing. It about freaked me out when the DIC indicated I was low on oil with none dripping on the concrete or elsewhere. Wasn't even showing on the dipstick and have 3200 miles since my last oil change in Oct 2021. 

 

Think it might be time to check out Dodge or other!

    • This is NOT impact damage nor neglect. There were previous class action lawsuits because of such paint preparation st GM manufacturing plant. Not just the Cherry Red Color. This paint is applied in three processes to obtain the desired color.  The manufacturer will cover for 36 months or 36k miles only. That rust is actually corrosion because of the paint process failure. Corrosion is covered for 100,100 miles or a certain months. However their corrosion doesn't include this type. Go figure. Clearly manufacturer knew from previous paint issues. This started 3 weeks ago out of the blue.  
    • Is it time to put a piece of tape over the CEL? 
    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
