Same issue on 18 suburban premier.    Dealer lead mechanic thinks it is the instrument cluster panel and are replacing it under warranty tomorrow.      My 17 didn’t do this.   We shall see if it fixes it, less than optimistic.

Didn’t fix it as I suspected

For those of you who did the repair yourself, how has it held up over time?

Thanks to TrickyMick for the tutorial.  I have silenced mine (temporarily??) by using a needle tip grease gun adapter and packing the area between the shaft and collar with green mercury marine outdrive bearing grease.  If it comes back I will be doing exactly what TrickyMick did.

Did the noise return?

Sorry but I have more questions!

Perhaps a better question is do I need to reapply the white sealant when I change out the boot? Mine seems to have less than previously posted pictures. I guess I’ll get my answer when I test drive it?

is the inner seal of the boot Supposed to go into the hole in the firewall or can I press the boot against the firewall and tighten the nuts?

Are the nuts self-push? Felt like I over torqued one and would like to replace it.

thanks everyone!

Just an update, all is quiet! The new boot filled with while lithium grease did the trick.

Hope this works!!  I just ordered the boot and grease.   This has been driving me nuts all summer.   Dealership inspected the seal beginning of the year but didn't replace it so it wasn't fixed.  Driving with the windows down or with the music loud is not a good fix.

The fix is still working for me! I think it had to do with the slop job they did with the adhesive messing with the seal. Good luck and post an update.

I give up.  How does the steering shaft come apart?  I removed both bolts and cannot get the black, metal ribbed piece in the middle to move to free the steering shaft.  Any ideas or what did anyone else do to get it to move?  (I did put the bottom bolt back in but with it out I cannot get it free - I know it shows in the pic)

The trick is to take the shaft above it (the one going into the boot and into the black ribbed piece) and push it into the boot until it pops out of the black ribbed piece.

Ok, I'll try it again tomorrow.  I tried pushing up on the shaft but it barely moves for me.  It moves a little but not nearly enough to clear the bottom part.  Thank you.

I have pushed with all of my might and it will not budge.  You guys were able to move this with your bare hands?  I have my feet in the battery tray and I'm leaning in with both hands pushing the shaft towards the fire wall and it will just not move.  Is it supposed to compress like a shock?   This seems straight forward enough but I'm either doing something wrong or mine doesn't move.

Yes it moves freely into the firewall. I’m guessing yours is fused to the bottom piece. Maybe give it some penetrating oil and some light taps?

It's loose at the bottom.  There is some play with the bolt out of it.  It appears to be stuck at the top where it should compress.   Even if I did get it to move I'd be afraid I couldn't get it back down.  Guess I'll have to have the dealership replace it.  It will not budge.  (smh)  Frustrating.  Thank you for trying to help.  Much appreciated.
