Ticking/fluttering sound from driver's footwell - TSB #PIP5570

Technically, it is a PI (preliminary information). Either way, your dealer is an idiot, lazy, or both.

Did you print it and take it to them? I assume by their lack of action that you are out of the 3/36 warranty?

first they said it was from all data not GM and they couldn't do a thing about it. So I looked it up when I was there and it looks like a GM document to me. They finally agreed to look into it again but they don't think it's from GM. I showed them the PDF on my phone and she was pretty non-responsive.

My truck is less than a year old with 3500 miles

Well then my suspicion is correct, your dealer is an idiot. Find another one.

I think the service writer was just taking the techs word for it. The tech was clearly wrong hopefully they have somebody else look at it. I'm a service tech myself, but not automotive and we have a few guys at our shop that don't have any clue as to what they're doing too.

This thread resolved my issue. I hear it faintly once in a blue moon but way better than before. Dealer confirmed misaligned/deformed boot causing sound leakage.

They came back and told me that "it's no longer a valid tsb and we can't do anything about it". They did fix the other issue so I'll just have to fix it myself.

It's like they were too arrogant after the first tech had no idea what he was talking about to acknowledge it's a real GM bulletin. Besides that, what kind of techs do you have if they can only look at and fix something if it's a TSB? How about you look at the issue and figure it out?

Try a different dealer. They did mine no problem once they confirmed it was in fact the seal. It’s much more enjoyable to drive now. A rental I had, a 2018 5.3, had same noise. Sounds like they get messed up during production and if not corrected, become deformed after extended heat cycles.

So I have this same problem.. Took mine to the dealership yesterday and changed the boot around the steering column and the second I drove off the lot I heard it again. Picked up the service guy to drive him around the block to see if he could hear it, of course not!!! So I let the have it one more day to make sure everything is tight behind the odometer. I wish I could post the video I have but its too big SMH.. I really don't know what else it could be. Its more of a flutter/ticking sound.. This truck has been nothing but ISSUES since I've bought it in December.

Forget the freaking dealer! Just replacing the boot isn't going to do it. See my simple fix instructions in this thread. Go to the store and get you some synthetic grease and take 10 minutes of your time to fix it. If you own a 10mm wrench and have a functioning central nervous system, you can do this!

So that didn't do it.. I took apart the whole part of the odometer dash and couldn't figure out where the noise is coming from. I tightened every bolt behind each panel I could find and it wasn't fixed. I honestly want to say that the noise is coming from my odometer when I drive over rougher roads. I am going insane over here trying to figure this thing out. I'm assuming you can't unplug the odometer and drive without it plugged in? Something else that makes me believe that it is something to do with the odometer is I went over a pretty big speed bump this AM and it sounded like something was clunking around that area, almost like whatever was moving hit the top and bottom of the enclosure and made the same noise.. send help please lol

Take the rubber boots off the firewall with three 10mm nuts. Disconnect the steering shaft under the brake master cylinder and separate so you can slide boot off. Apply rubber-safe synthetic grease (I used Sil-Glyde) liberally between the plastic rings inside the boot (you'll see them in the narrow end, distal to the firewall). Reinstall boot and wipe off any excess that pushes out onto the steering shaft. Enjoy your now flutter-free truck!

My dumb ass dealer solved nothing either. I just ordered some sil glyde per your advice. Do you know what the bolts on the steering shaft need to be re torqued to, as I’m going to try to do this Sunday. Ty for the help poolboy

FYI, the PI referenced in this thread has been removed from GM's system hence the dealer cannot warranty a truck referencing it. The good news is that it has been upgraded to an actual TSB. TSB 18-NA-349 or Doc #5168937
