Disable ABS/Traction Control

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Newbie to the forum here, and new to GM. I picked up an 09 Sierra Denali a few months back and have been loving it!!! However this thing is downright scary when it comes to stopping in the snow. The truck drives well through the snow, but step on the brake and the pedal keeps pulsating and the truck keeps on a rollin.

In short - is there a way to disable the ABS, along with the traction control and stabilitrac? And if I were to disable, say, the traction control - would that in turn disable ABS etc. Is there maybe a tuner that would accomplish this and keep the lights off the dash? TIA!

Look thru the forums,

There you will find what you seek.

A lot of information already posted.

I know, I have been looking for the same thing

That doesnt sound very promising then! I was looking through a lot on Google, but most of the forums were related to late 90 - early 00's. I've read of people pulling fuses, and read about someone who wired in a switch after the abs (cant exactly remember) so they could remotely turn it off/on in the cab. I thought someone may have come up with something by now

This is the most helpful thread I have found so far. I'm not to keen on messing with factory electrical wires, but so far thats the best solution I have seen.

I just prefer the feel of older vehicles without ABS, traction control etc. I feel it puts a good driver in much better control of a hairy situation, than "safety controls" can. Im only 26, but I'll for sure tell you not all "new school" is better than "old school." I cant be alone in feeling this way.

The only feature that doesn't cause swear words is abs. Your hands are tied now, the only thing you can do is stand on the brakes and hope. Some of accident avoidance I learned involve sliding and power sliding. Every ( safety ) feature is designed to keep your vehicle strait. Not always preferred. Front drive and people unwilling to really learn to drive helped too.

My ABS caused me plenty of swear words when I went (like you said) STRAIGHT off a windy driveway into a rock at 5 mph, smashed up my front bumper, and then had to be pulled out because my stabilicrap and traction retarder kept me from driving myself out. I had ZERO control, and man thats a scary feeling.

It looks like my plans for next year are:

1: Better tires. Bought truck used at dealership a few months back with "BlackLions" on them. Blaaahh never heard of them in my life, and despite the decent reviews they have online... I want my BFG's T/A Ko2s back that I had on my 99' Dodge when I sold it.. Man that truck was a snow BEAST

2: Disabling the new age crap. Which from what I've found means pulling a fuse, or better yet.. running a switch.

People sometimes get confused what abs is. It allows your braking to modulate and avoid one tire lock up. If you wanted to slide your vehicle to avoid contact that’s anti-spin-stabilitrac. Braking and throttle avoidance is possible with anti lock. Not with anti-spin and stabilitrac.

Ok good. I have debated telling you what I would do because I don't want to be liable if something were to happen because these features are for safety and should not be tampered with.

But what you wouldn't want to do is run a switch on your dash where you spliced into the two EBCM circuit powers. Disabling the EBCM will disable the ABS/Traction control system and this should NEVER be done. The EBCM is located underneath the drivers door and the 2 circuits that you should not install a switch on are circuits 1 Red/Black wire and Circuit 25 Red wire. I say this because you mentioned the fuses.

That's what you shouldn't do by no means!

What I on the other hand wouldn't do, is splice into my ground circuit. The reason I wouldn't do that is because if for some reason the power wires running through the dash got pinched it could short the vehicle out. If you shorted a ground out... The ground is G300 and it located on the frame. The circuits to the EBCM you don't want to splice into by any means are circuits 13 and 38 Black wires.

Take this for what you will... ABS / TRACTION CONTROL / STABILITY SYSTEMS ARE FOR SAFETY AND SHOULD NEVER BE TAMPERED WITH!
