Ugh... dealer cracked my windshield.

So I brought my 2017 midnight edition in for some basic maintenance. Just an oil change and tire rotation. I also asked them to replace my wiper blades. I waited while it was being serviced.

I left the dealership and went to work.

On my way home from work 8 hours later I noticed my windshield was cracked right where the end of the wiper arm (passenger side)meets the glass. They must have had the blade removed at which point the arm must have snapped down on the windshield cracking it. The crack must have spread while the truck was sitting in the cold at my work parking lot because I didn’t see it initially after the service was completed.

I called around 5:00 immediately after noticing it. The service managers had left for the night. I’m expecting a call on Monday. I have zero deductible glass insurance but I feel that the dealership should replace it without me involving my insurance.

Piss me off...

Long story short, When I was a young tech in training (mercedes) I cracked a window doing a set of wipers too haha.

I've changed dozens and dozens of wiper blades before then.... But one of lifes little stabs in the back, as soon as I start working at a nice dealership.... snap crackle and pop! I reported it immediately and it was replaced real quick in my stall by one of the glass guys at the dealer. I'm sure they told the customer, but he didnt have to pay or file anything. The repair was 100% on our side.

You can bet, i've never done it again! haha. I havent even worked in a dealer in 10 years, but every time Ive done blades since, I take extra caution in holding that wiper arm.

But when I did it back then, it cracked the glass side to side on the spot. There wasnt a little chip or crack. The wiper arm springs were stout!

Good luck! If its a good dealer, they will take care of you with zero issues.

This is the exact reason my cars/trucks never enter a dealership for any service. You turn those keys over to them you never know what’s going to happen. The reality is is that your car means nothing to them and they will never take the same care of it the owner would.

Oil change and tire rotation? Take a couple of

hours on a Saturday and do it yourself.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. let us know

how they handle it.

Understood, but I’m at a place in my life where laying under a vehicle in my driveway and doing maintenance days are over. Especially since I get free oil changes and tire rotations for as long as I own the vehicle.

I’ll let it known how they handled it.

UPDATE:

Dealer is replacing the windshield on their dime.. apologizing up and down.

I’m happy with their handling of the situation.

It's just a shame the " Tech " did not report it and be upfront when it happened. [emoji20]

So was the manager.. he said that they don’t get penalized for mistakes like that. The tech might have not seen it.. crack was very small initially, but of course spread like crazy after a few hours.. by Sunday it traveled across the whole windshield

I worked on 12-1400 vehicles a year.  Bumps and bruises are going to happen. The oil change guy should have reported it. I'm sure he knew. I always let the service manager know no matter how small I thought the issue was. Let them deal with it. If you are any good it won't matter other than a guilty feeling. If you suck, you won't be around long anyway.

    • Thanks for all the help so far!   I did try right from 2026 right down to 2021, and only from 2023 down lets me select the option for tire psi change, but I get the vehicle not supported error!   I'll definitely try it under Chevrolet after work today, and I'll get the sensor number from gm for my truck tire sensors. And I'll let you know if it works for me under Chevrolet!   And if that doesn't work, I'm going to guess that what @Atlas said about maybe I have a different body control module could be true!
    • From where I'm sitting this sounds like a compatibility problem. I'm assuming the 2007 was a 900-series truck, and not an 800-series (they were sold side-by-side in dealerships that model year), since it starts and runs.   This is why I HATE post-2006 vehicles. Everything becomes a huge problem when you try to keep the thing running for longer than the manufacturer has designed it to.    I can't remember when Global-A architecture started - either '10 or '11. For your sake, you had better hope it's '11, or you're going to be spending some BIG money to correct this cluster-eff. That's something you need to find out before doing anything else. You may have several computers bricked ... but the fact that it runs tells me you MIGHT be ok here.     EDIT: Just did a quick refresher. You're screwed. This is Global-A. The 2 systems are NOT compatible in the slightest. Once you get the correct engine in there that IS compatible, you're going to need to see how many computers are locked. Absolute NIGHTMARE to straighten out, too. Your buddy might be better off cutting his losses and finding something else.   Welcome to post-2006 vehicle electronics. This is why I quit the industry, and drive nothing built after 1994. This stuff takes all the fun out of wrenching!

    • True, hard to say what differences there may or may not be between Chev and GM as well as a production year or mid year part change either.    I just found it odd that under the Sierra choice on the Autel that many of the last few years of production year did not include the choice of changing the tire pressure but if that is an Autel thing or a GM thing as to why the choices were not there. Knowing what tpms sensors are on the truck should give some guidance into which choices on the tool even make sense to try as I wouldn't give up just yet with the tool but I guess he will see what if anything he comes up with if he finds out a bit more info and tries a few more things on the Autel.
    • I'm sure if you went to a junkyard where you go in and pull the part off the truck yourself, not a used part place where they do it for you, you can get that part on it's own.  Depending on if and what else you would be buying, and time of day, they might even just skip over adding it as a item to the bill.
