Let's Debate: reg cab or x-cab...

Currently own a 2002 Silverado Z71 extended cab 4x4. Has 55,000 miles on it, and truthfully, I am getting pretty "bored" with it. I know I can see $20,000 out of this truck, and that's all I have invested in it, so that's OK.

In the past, I have owned a few nice reg cab trucks. First truck was a 1993 Chevy 1500 reg cab-5 speed 2 wheeler with a 5.7. Sweet. But a little tricky in the snow, but still made it. Then years later I moved into a 1992 GMC K1500 reg cab stepside. Totally awesome little truck.

But then I had a 1998 GMC K1500 SLT 4x4 with extended cab. Now I have this 02 Silverado with extended cab, and truthfully, I don't even use the space.

But having the extended cab DOES make the truck worth a little more $$$

So I head up to my local Chevy dealer one night after they close just to look around and see what's up there. I found a sweet 04 Silverado reg cab, short box, 4x4. Sticker price $31,400. I have a classmate from the old days that sells there. I call him up, and he says for me he needs $25,300!! He gave a real good price. But the color is wrong (some new red). I will call him back Mon pm to see if he found any.

What do you guys think?? Stick with a boring ext cab 02? Get a reg cab 04? Let's see some opinions!!

Personally I prefer regular cabs. All three trucks I've owned have been regular cabs.

I don't have a family, so there is no need for the extra room.

My opinion, if I wanted a four passenger vehicle, I'll buy a Caddy.

Trucks should only have huge engines and manual transmissions and hold three people(4 if you are good friends-with a bench seat of course).

Not everyone agrees with me, but everyone wants a truck that behaves like a car, they want the extra passenger space, they want the smooth ride.

I think if you want to haul a lot of crap and people too, buy a Suburban.

Leave those of us who want a "real" truck to get them at a decent price.

Hey man!

i would say stick with your car that you have right now..but then again im just not a reg. cab type of guy...good luck with your decision! :)

Extended cab for me. Important tools go under the extended cab seat, and the seat sometimes serves as a shelf for other valuable things that needs to be kept secure and locked up. Groceries stack nicely in an extended cab truck, and my fishing gear can be kept there without much fear of theft.

OH!!! You can mean you can stick people back there????!!!!! You ARE kidding, right? I was wondering why that shelf back there was padded. :sigh:

let me ask this

Can you get a new 04 reg cab truck WITH LEATHER???

Because I really do miss my leather from my 98 SLT!!!

Here's what I'm thinking right now:

04 Chevy/GMC whatever

Reg Cab

Short Box

5.3

Autotrac 4x4

Z71

Center Console if possible

Black or dark Blue exterior

HOPEFULLY IF POSSIBLE LEATHER INTERIOR!!

Steering Wheel Controls

Is this possible or not?? Don't have a 04 brochure in front of me.

Well my current truck is an ext cab. I've driven a few regulars at jobs in the past. When I was first kicking around the idea of a truck years ago, I liked the idea of a reg cab shortbox, but being 6'5, the ext cab gives me more room. I also have a cabinet under the rear seat with assorted emergency gear. I didn't get the ext planning to haul people, but I have had the neighbors going out to dinner and such with me lately, and it's nice. Same story for shopping and wanting to place items inside so they're secure- I like the dark quarter windows too. It's all a matter of what your needs are really- do you need the people room? Do you prefer the reg cab look? If I were buying now, I don't know what'd I'd do. I'd like an HD with the 4 doors and higher height, but then the length has to be considered for garage space...oh well, blue is going to be with me for a while to come :)

i plan on a crewcab for my next truck. Sometimes i would like to have more room in the back

My personal opinion is for a reg. cab. I'm a single guy, I perfer the shorter wheel base, and smaller blind spots. I think they look better too. I would never buy an x-cab. If I was going to buy extra length, I would get the crew cab.

I also went from a reg cab s-10 to a fullsize, so the truck I have now seems huge. I just really enjoy the tighter radias more than I would the extra room.

I'm all for the extended cab. I like the extra room to throw the junk that I don't want next to me. Really, I perfer the looks of the regular cab, but the luxury of having that extra space inside outweighed the outside appearance issue. Besides, my hu8nting buddies gat to sit in the back while I drive. :)

I would have to agree with Ryan on this one! :)

I guess it all boils down to wether or not you want/need the extra space.

Its all about personal prefrence. I'm a regular cab guy, because I like the sporty look of it with a stepside bed - ext cabs with the stepside look really out of place IMO. If you need the extra space, go for it. It also is a good place for some car audio stuff, finding a place for a subwoofer in a reg cab is difficult - only good place is behind the passenger seat and then you have uber rattles from the seat going crazy. Trying to put people back there, however, is cruel and unusual punishment unless its for like 5 or 10 minutes, and even then... But if you use it more for a utility truck I can see how the extra space would come in handy. Or if you want a big lifted truck, reg cab again looks somewhat out of place there - a nice ext cab with a good lift and some tires that fit the lift looks great.

It's all about prefrence. There is no "right" choice.

Buy what you need! If you only need a reg cab get it and save some money. Maybe you should save your money and do some mods to your current truck! Make it something you enjoy driving again!!!

As for me I've had 98' Sonoma ext cab, 00' Sierra ext cab and now a 03' Sierra CREWCAB!!!! 1500hd and let me tell you the new crewcab is my favorite!! When lunch time rolls around at work we always take my truck, it fits more people than any one else's car or ext cab does. I also did some moding to it which makes it even more fun to drive!!! Now I find myself looking for the next thing to improve or play with on the truck makes me feel like a kid.

Just my opinion,

Matt :)

Extended cabs and crew cabs are like mini vans, they're for older married folks. Real trucks have regular cabs. And did someone say they want to put performance mods on a crew cab? Gimme a 4,000 lb regular cab with a short bed and a big V8. This is certainly not a corvette or sport car, but then I like driving trucks.
