Neverdrift Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Hello everyone my mother has a 2004 Chevy 3500 with a 8.1 and we found a 2001 Chevy 3500 with a 8.1 with really low miles and a good price we were wondering if the engine from the 2001 will work in the 2004 or does the wiring harness and everything have to be changed also. Thank you
davester Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 I don't know your engine, but for my truck (6.0L LQ4 engine), I believe earlier 6.0Ls would swap in, but I'd also have to swap a bunch of sensors, the fuel rail, things like that to make it work. I would expect it to be similar for your 8.1L, but maybe someone else will have more definite info on your engine.
Jglew82 Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 That older engine will bolt right in. If you note any differences between the two (they should be the exact same, but just in case the '01 is drive by cable) then swap your intake, fuel rail, injectors, and throttle body over from the '04 to the '01. In any case, use your existing PCM and wire harness.
