Did I drive the axle seal in too far???

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 Express 3500.  Was changing the rear axle seal, and I think I may have driven it in too far.  It's driven in evenly, but it's a few mm recessed inside the hub.  I recall that when I took off the old ones, they were flush with the hub.  Not sure if it matters that it got banged in that deep?  At this point I would have to basically ruin it to get it out and install a new one...thanks

It likely will be fine, as the inner part of the seal goes on the axle about a cm, so it's still got good overlap.  Make sure the seating surface on the axle is nice and clean, and that the old inner part isn't still on it.  I always worry about that inner seal going on right as well, as there's no way to check/see if it's ok and taking the hub off again means putting in a new seal.

I would suggest also checking that the parking brake pads & hardware are clean and pre-adjust the pads so the hub just fits over the pads, as adjusting the pads later sucks (driver's side isn't bad, passenger side was bad, I need to use a flashlight, mirror, custom bent tool and hope I spin the adjust the right direction).
