Just thought I would update everyone. I ended up getting a 3D printer last week and plugs for the openings on the outer frame were a must. I designed them and they are a perfect fit. Barely even notice that they are there, and no more holes! Still have the holes on the inside to allow moisture to evaporate. Printing the last small slot above the keyway now and will be finished.

 

Please ignore the pink chalk, the kids were outside today for some much needed playtime amidst the quarantine.
