Crash data recording

He guys I’ve never really done any posting just reading others post. I have a 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT pkg. I had someone backed in to me the other day about 24 hours after I discontinued my OnStar services. So there wasn’t a crash report from OnStar. My question is: does the onboard computer in my truck record crashes without OnStar being active?  If so is there a way to retrieve this data. I am trying to prove that I wasn’t moving at the time of contact with the other vehicle. Any of your valuable knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

From all indications in the manual, it seems the EDR is independent of OnStar. I'm not even sure OnStar can access the EDR. If you read the highlighted section, it says access to the vehicle and a special equipment is required. You should talk to the dealer as they should have this special equipment to read the EDR provided it hasn't been overwritten.

Thanks for the feedback on the data recording.  Should all dealerships have the capability to retrieve this data?

The EDR isn't going to have anything for a parking lot fender bender. If you did not blow any airbags, set off any pretensioners or any of the like - it will not have gone off.

Thanks for the info on the limitations of recording minor impacts. I called the local dealership this morning and the service manager said that in order to retrieve any info from the black box it had to be removed and sent off. He said he has only done one in his entire career of 20+ years. It took 3 weeks to get the info from it and the insurance company requested and paid for it. Thanks again for the input!

That's good to know. After this ordeal is over, I would recommend you secure yourself a front and rear dash cam.
