GM dealership adding on services...

Hey everyone,

My 2015 Z71 is at GM right now having the water pump replaced under warranty as it has gone bad at only 46K miles.

They called me telling me I need to do a coolant flush for $190, air filter for $40 and "induction service" for $199.

Curious about the coolant because manual clearly states that it doesn't need to be flushed/replaced until 150K miles or 5 years, even under the "severe" chart. Why would I need to replace it at 46K? They tried to tell me it's because we are in south FL. I've only been here 1 out of the 4 years I've owned it. Also, don't they have to replace it anyways in order to replace the pump?

Air filter probably needs replacement, and I can do that myself easy and cheap.

I normally work on cars and bikes. So I have no idea what "induction service" even is. She tried to explain it but it sounded like a sales pitch. Any one familiar with this? Is it bogus?

Thanks in advance!

The water pump change takes care of the coolant. The induction could have something to do with value stem build up. I must say I have a di engine from a different brand. I haven’t done an induction service on it. I would do sea foam if it appeared to run erratic. Something you can do yourself. To be sure check your manual in the maintenance section.

Yes, this totally sounds like they want to jack you for as much money as possible.  Especially that coolant flush,as at least 1/2 the fluid should be new after replacing the water pump...

Thanks for the reply!

I'm not having any issues with the truck at all except for the issue from the water pump (engine gets to like 240-250 then the fans finally cool it off, and stay running for a bit after truck is off). Don't think running sea foam through it would be necessary right now, but have done it before. So I'm familiar with it.

The manual says nothing of "induction service". So, it sounds like they just tried to get extra $ out of me today, and failed.

It does say I need to replace brake fluid. So I will inspect that first, and replace if needed.

Thank you!

I am going to check the coolant when I get home to see if they replaced it or reused it. :)

Are you saying your engine is still running at 240 - 250 degrees?

Wow, if so, that is way too hot.

That's why it is there now having the water pump replaced.

I was just curious about the $500 in services they tried to add on to it... lol

You can pass on both.  Mainly looking for some customer pay work on a warranty job.  The coolant flush isn't a terrible idea, but the water pump job will replace about 1/3-1/2 of the coolant in the system.  Warranty water pump replacement really will only consist of topping off/replacing the coolant that was lost during the job, hence the upsell of the customer pay flush.

That's what I was thinking as she started trying to sell it to me...

Thanks everyone!!!

How long did you run/drive the truck at those temps?

I would be a little afraid of a possible blown head gasket, I would inquire about a pressure test of the cooling system to make sure it is still pressurized.

It only started last week, and it was random. It never was consistently staying at those temps. It would just hit it and rapidly cool off with the fans on. Maybe drove it 2-3 times like that.

If the customer only wants 1qty tire than so be it.  Normally, you replace 2qty tires @ a time.  I have never done a water pump without changing the coolant?  Can you do it yes!  I have no idea why you wouldn't replace the entire coolant fluid though.  To each is own.  Yes, Dealerships do everything in their power to up sell the maintenance items.

They replaced the water pump on my 2015 under warranty and they never tried to bilk me for a coolant flush.  I would tell them, prove it to me?
