P06DD - Ghost Code

Hi,

I am new to the forum and looking for a little help.

First a little info on my truck: I have had a 2014 Silverado; 4x4 6Cyl 4.3L engine. since new. Regular oil changes at the dealership, every 3000-4000 miles. Truck just hit 92000 Miles and has been out of power train warranty since June.

Now on to the Issue at hand:

For the last 2 years my truck has been pulling a random check engine light code. Every time it is P06DD - Engine Oil Pressure Control Circuit Stuck off. The first time this code appeared was around 70,000 Miles and my truck would have still be under warranty. When i called the dealership they told me to check the engine oil level. Dipstick was bone dry. Added about 2 quarts, drove for a few days, and cod cleared itself. Thought everything was good. Monitored my driveway for leaking oil and found nothing. Now since that day, this code will come back intermittently. Basically around 2000 miles after every oil change it will pop up. I add about a quart or so to top off the dip stick, reset the code, and usually its OK. When i talk to the dealership they claim that this type of oil consumption is normal, and that i need to either have my oil changed more frequently. I travel about 600 miles a week for work, to have it changed more frequently would mean that i need to get an oil change about once a month, who had time for that. I have tried having the check engine light diagnosed multiple times and even brought it to an outside mechanic in case the dealership was hiding the issue, no one can find anything wrong.

So my question is this:

- Is this type of oil consumption truly normal for these trucks?

- Will topping off my oil every 1000 miles be bad for the truck and could it be a sign of something more serious going on?

- Seems odd that pulling a check engine light every 2000 miles would be "normal" for a truck just over 5 years old with under 100k Miles.

Not sure what my options are at this point. Originally, had i pressed the issue while under warranty, maybe they would have done something for me. Now i am about 5 months out of warranty and not sure if i should just deal with it, or possibly trade the truck in before something more serious goes wrong as a result of this issue...

Sadly 1qt per 1000 miles is considered the normal standard now. Some trucks do it some don't. There could be excessive blow by on the piston rings or maybe a valve seal leaking but unless you are willing to tear into the engine to look you won't know till it starts smoking.

thanks Lsgun1 for your reply... Do you think IF they had teared into it when i first brought it up that they would have covered rings and seals as a warranty item? I am just wondering how much i should push the issue since it has been going on since when i was well under warranty, and i have it documented at the dealership.

my preference is to keep it since i only have 6months of payments left... but i could get into a new one for almost the same monthly payment and just start over.... The plan was to drive this one to the ground...

It may not get any worse so it's really up to you if you want to start over money wise. You could also run it till it really screws up and just do a new/junkyard engine for a lot less then a new truck. The options aren't great. For the price to tear down and do rings you may as well just have another engine on hand. You can try running a slightly heavier oil also. I don't know what the V6 wants but if its 5w20 go to 5w30 and see if you get any change.

105K on the clock of my 4.3 2WD RCSB. It uses no oil in it's 5K OCI. That word normal is a warranty dodge that you can not circumvent at a quart in 2K however, normal it is not. Move on or fix the problem.

Start with some self education. Link above.

This code should not be tripped by a single quart low. Ask yourself why?

Some oil loss is expected....always been told due to lack of lead in the fuels.

but that is definitely not normal

Have them do an oil pressure check using the filter block tool and not the scan tool and see if that second stage is actually kicking in. Do it full and a quart down. Something hinky here. A single quart should not trip this code if everything else is working right.

70K sounds about right for the oil pressure screen to be replaced too. Remove and inspect. Install a new switch as you will be in there. Both parts are cheap and easy to get at in the 4.3. That screen will tell you a great deal about oil system cleanliness.

    • Still looks like a rivet to me in the pics, I don't see a nut and none of the pics show the head of the screw. But if you says so.....
    • Thanks for all the help so far!   I did try right from 2026 right down to 2021, and only from 2023 down lets me select the option for tire psi change, but I get the vehicle not supported error!   I'll definitely try it under Chevrolet after work today, and I'll get the sensor number from gm for my truck tire sensors. And I'll let you know if it works for me under Chevrolet!   And if that doesn't work, I'm going to guess that what @Atlas said about maybe I have a different body control module could be true!
    • From where I'm sitting this sounds like a compatibility problem. I'm assuming the 2007 was a 900-series truck, and not an 800-series (they were sold side-by-side in dealerships that model year), since it starts and runs.   This is why I HATE post-2006 vehicles. Everything becomes a huge problem when you try to keep the thing running for longer than the manufacturer has designed it to.    I can't remember when Global-A architecture started - either '10 or '11. For your sake, you had better hope it's '11, or you're going to be spending some BIG money to correct this cluster-eff. That's something you need to find out before doing anything else. You may have several computers bricked ... but the fact that it runs tells me you MIGHT be ok here.     EDIT: Just did a quick refresher. You're screwed. This is Global-A. The 2 systems are NOT compatible in the slightest. Once you get the correct engine in there that IS compatible, you're going to need to see how many computers are locked. Absolute NIGHTMARE to straighten out, too. Your buddy might be better off cutting his losses and finding something else.   Welcome to post-2006 vehicle electronics. This is why I quit the industry, and drive nothing built after 1994. This stuff takes all the fun out of wrenching!

    • True, hard to say what differences there may or may not be between Chev and GM as well as a production year or mid year part change either.    I just found it odd that under the Sierra choice on the Autel that many of the last few years of production year did not include the choice of changing the tire pressure but if that is an Autel thing or a GM thing as to why the choices were not there. Knowing what tpms sensors are on the truck should give some guidance into which choices on the tool even make sense to try as I wouldn't give up just yet with the tool but I guess he will see what if anything he comes up with if he finds out a bit more info and tries a few more things on the Autel.
