ARE VS. LEER TRUCK BED CAPS

Recommended Posts

Purchased a ARE Classic cap and not happy that sides overlap bed side rails at least a inch. Dealer told me that is how they fit. Should of maybe bought a leer that was a little more money. Had a coupon to save $125 for free carpet headliner from ARE.

Color matched good and everything else with cap is ok on my 2018 Silverado.

They make different styles, some overlap like yours....usually the nicer ones do this and some just sit on top of the bed rails, usually entry level caps. Leers are going to do the same thing depending on how nice of a unit you want. I used to sell ARE some years back and I can tell you that the paint quality will be superior to Leer....at least that was the case when I was selling them.

I bought a used Leer and had it on my truck for a few months. It had enough overlap that I tried to fix it, maybe a half to 3/4 inch on 1 side. Its easier with 2 people, 1 can crawl in bed and loosen the clamps, one stay on the outside and push like hell. Use a battery powered impact.

I have a snugtop from 1993 on my GMT400. No problems besides a small window leak which needs to be resealed. Unfortunately mine has the open front with rubber seal which will rub cab paint off unless you put 3M clear tape to protect paint. Not sure if they even sell the open front rubber seal toppers now that they have drop down window option.

Phone the manufacturer and ask them where you can get a proper install.  At first, I wasn't satisfied with my install and went back to where I bought the canopy.  The guy behind the counter who sold me the product (Century) came out and set it up properly. Apparently he was on the sales floor because he knew more about his products than the installers! There is a little more  to setting up a canopy properly than simply clamping it down where it lands.  You don't want the overlap touching the truck but an even gap all around will give you the look that you want.
