Has he posted his used oil analysis video for the Rotella yet? I like this guy's videos...haven't checked in on his videos in a while, but in the past I've found his stuff useful for Ford vehicles. I've watched some of his oil comparison videos in the past...I want to say he was pretty pleased with Amazon Basics or Walmart's Super Tech. Most of the newer oils have become very similar in their goals of reducing lspi and valve coking. And because of that their add packs have drawn similar to each other. Even Valvoline - who always had a different add pack formula than most (high sodium, low moly) - has since changed their formula. Now they look like all the rest. The house blends have changed too, same with the Walmart stuff distributed by Warren industries. Amazon Basics is basically the same as the rest too.

Oil has changed because engines have changed. It's a strange time in the industry. It's rare for me to see a direct injection vehicle come in that isn't low on oil. Whereas port injection vehicles (with a few exceptions) usually use less oil. And this is interesting because oil has changed, engines have changed, oil change intervals have changed...but people haven't changed. Customers still push and ignore maintenance intervals. They may have gotten away with that with their port injected vehicles, but they are discovering they can't get away with that with their direct injection/turbo engines. I'm seeing it. I'm hearing about it. The people that skip their oil changes and never open their hoods...then come in like, oh I think I missed my last oil change, oh well. Well, they're finding out the hard way, as their engines are drinking so much oil that the low oil light is coming on before they hit 3,000  miles...engines needing rings before they are at 80,000 miles...timing chains before 100k...lifters, cams, actuators, bearings. And you know what?? They don't care. First sign of trouble they trade them in and they're off to ruin their next vehicle.

Before I buy any direct injection vehicle right now, I want a maintenance history. And it better be on point. Because you'll end up spending 25 grand on a used vehicle that can't make it three weeks without it drinking three quarts of oil. And there's no recourse. They'll tell you, oh well, it's "normal". Sorry.

This is the exact reason I DO NOT BUY USED! I’m sure there are a few well maintained vehicles out there like mine but after being a part of these forums there’s no freaking way. I’m very seriously into maintaining my vehicle, all my vehicles but over 90% of people on these forums are buying oil based on sales and low prices. The video I posted shows the Rotella oil didn’t impress him at all, came in from Blackstone showing its no better than any other cheap oil. Engines have definitely changed, people haven’t. I use ONLY Amsoil, change every 4-5K miles, use Amsoil filter or Wix XP. It’s not the length of the intervals that I pay attention to, it’s the use between the oil changes that matter. I’m in my truck many times just idling as I’m writing up performance invoices which is NOT healthy for the engine but this wouldn’t cause 90% of people to care.

Amsoil 0W20 Signature Series every 4-5K miles. I’ve been keeping an eye on my oil and have NEVER needed to add oil, not even once while running Amsoil SS. I know it’s a 20K mile oil but that’s never going to happen for any of my vehicles. People don’t get it, yes $10 per quart is a bit higher than that cheap lawnmower oil but my oil change costs me $100 every time I change my oil, that’s .02 cents per mile at 5K mile OCI’s and .025
(not .25 cents) cents per mile at 4K mile intervals. People pay minimum $50K for these vehicles, and bitch and complain about the cost of extreme protection motor oils like Amsoil. I will NEVER buy any used truck or suv, only buy new for me. I’ve always cared about my vehicles to the point that a couple of my buddies that I grew up with and now own GM dealerships have always offered much more for my trade ins specifically cause they add 100k warranty onto them knowing of my 4-5K mile OCI’s with Only Amsoil.

Today’s motors are far more sensitive and problematic, that’s for sure. Cars have gone up in price, don’t you think the cost of oil has too especially having to become even more protective? My answer, buy the best you can afford and pay attention to what your engine is doing.

Wishing everyone a wonderful new year with great health and prosperity.

Thanks, watched the video. 11,000 miles on that interval, TBN 1.6. He called it a great oil three times in that video. Wear metals identical with another oil he called "great oil". Estimated that he could have gone 15,000 miles if he had topped up with a fresh quart of oil.

So he certainly changed his tune from his initial video. Another excellent group lll hydrocracked oil, at an excellent price. I have a feeling he would have received similar results from any of the off the shelf group lll name brand synthetics available today. Great for 5,000 mile intervals and probably more.

And I do think that Amsoil is great oil...Redline, etc. The group lV's. But man, these group lll hydrocracks have come a long way and they're almost giving the stuff away. Makes it reasonable for the shorter intervals.

He's what he doesn't know. The TAN number. When TAN is above TBN bad things happen. Original TBN was 6 something on this oil. 30% of that number would be over 2. That oil was in need of a fork. It was DUN well before 11K.

>1 TBN is a generic value based on a TAN of 0. I have no idea what oils have a virgin acid value of zero.

I mean, I wouldn't run an oil 11,000 miles, but blackstone is saying he could have gone further. Wear metals are right where they're supposed to be. This is without topping up with a fresh quart of oil, if he had done that he could have squeezed another 50 hours out of this oil according to blackstone.

I didn't see what the TAN was...are you saying the TAN had dropped to the point of corrosion? Or sludge buildup? Varnish? I don't see too many oils doing that nowadays unless they're running an interval into the 20,000 mile plus range.

We have a person who owns one of these 3.5 engines at work, he's the ultimate test study. Guy doesn't like to perform maintenance. He'll run his engine to 10,000 miles using Exxon Super Flow...won't open that hood once. Ask him if he needs an oil change, he'll say...why, I just had one? He drives 140 miles a day. Funny thing is, despite the abuse of oil (and cheap oil) he has had ZERO issues with that engine internally. Doesn't consume much between changes, doesn't have problems. the problems he does have is the problems that these vehicles are known for...the front differential...coils. He has avoided the dreaded water pump failure thus far. The 3.5 places the water pump BEHIND the timing cover - when it fails it leaks through the weep hole and the coolant goes right into the crankcase, wiping out the engine in a matter of weeks if you don't catch it. It's an awful design. I watch this guy's videos because he's pretty knowledgeable with these specific vehicles and engines  (and his 3.5 has almost 300,000 miles on it, while experimenting with long drain intervals using various brands).

Regrading the Rotella Gas Truck oil --  I think it' more than good enough for your 5,000-7,000 mile intervals. Anything more than that and I'm not in that game with any oil. Never mind a group lll hydrocracked brew.

Not sure what video you watched butThe video I posted was the new, unused 5W30 oil he sent in. He said it was ok, nothing special and it compares itself to conventional oil not synthetics. It’s no better than lawnmower oil.

My video showed it to be crappy oil. But, to each their own.

Ok , I think you had me until you start throwing out terms like "lawnmower oil".

So the video I watched was the follow up video to the one you posted. Did you watch your own video you posted? It was the VOA. The second video is the test results of THAT oil AFTER it is put through a torture test. He runs the vehicle 11,000 miles on THAT "lawnmower oil", without topping up. The vehicle goes 11,000 miles until it finally consumes 1 quart of oil. At that point he stops the test and sends a sample out to the laboratory for testing. The test results were excellent. The laboratory tells him he could have gone an additional 50 hours/2,500 miles safely on that oil. He calls the oil excellent three times in the video.  Wear metals excellent.

Based on the Blackstone results, tested it new showed crap results. I’ve rarely seen a “New, unused” synthetic oil comeback from Blackstone with such bad results. So, that being said, I’d never use that oil, especially one that compares itself to conventional oils, not even full synthetic. Not sure if you’re in a GM DI engine but I’d worry about that oil for sure. Like I said, to each his/her own.

Speaking of oil testing, I was going to send off my Amsoil but thought what for, I don’t do extended OCI’s in any of my vehicles, never will and don’t know if you’re aware but GM has lowered their OCI’s from 7500 to 5000, and for very good reason.

Good luck and Happy New Year [emoji323][emoji324][emoji312]

Bad results? The moly is over 120!

He sends a sample of redline out for comparison and compares it to the Rotella...the Redline has a TBN of 7.4...not exactly blowing the Rotella out of the water at 6.7

There was nothing wrong with either test results. Go on bob is the oil guy, these VOA's are fine. And I would say the important piece would be the UOA, and the Rotella shined.

I don't do extended oil change intervals either. 5,000 miles on the dot, every single time. I have not read or heard anything about GM lowering their oil change intervals to 5,000 miles from 7,500...are you confusing that with when they lowered their oil life monitor setting to eclipse at 7,500 miles, whereas before it would take you into 10,000 mile and above territory?

But there is many test videos of the Rotella Gas Truck videos on youtube. Very favorable results. And there are countless posters on bob is the oil guy with favorable reviews and lab results.   I'm not a Rotella fanboy...I've been using it, it's been "great". But I wouldn't put it into the group llll category with the Amsoils and Redlines. But it is consider to be "good" in many circles.

I read the part of Bob Oil, it’s a toss up in the intro, back and forth as to whether or not there are Shell marketing teams entering the discussions. Also, now, instead of call them additives, Rotella gas truck oil is calling it antioxidants, sounds like a marketing ploy. Anyway, good luck with your choice, I’ll stick with my group 5 oil, no blueberries or any other antioxidants added lol.

Btw, if you’re happy with it and it fits your budget then that’s great. I always say, buy the best you can afford, keep an eye on it. Again, Good luck!

That's very nice of you, did you watch the video yet?

You never got back to me about your claim of the reduction in GM oil change interval parameters. I looked, couldn't find anything.

I didn't realize Amsoil was now a group V oil (always thought it was a group lV).

And yes, agree Rotella has jumped on marketing claims and an apparent niche in the  automotive market (SUV's and trucks). lol. But then again I guess they all make their claims. Shell I believe also makes Pennzoil Products, and they too have thier claims - the good old GTL. Gas to liquid. The never ending quest to make to make the perfect little round molecule. Kind of like the claim to fame of a group lV.

Personally I'll never go over 5,000 miles on any oil right now with a direct injection engine...been down that road before. Not doing it again.

Good luck to you too.

You’re correct, I meant Amsoil SS is group 4 plus.
