It varies both with the model/year of the truck, and then exactly how the fuel level sensor reads on each particular truck.

 

My truck can go at least 20 miles, but I haven't found the limit.

 

And you don't want to find the limit either.

 

Fuel pumps rely on fuel for both cooling and lubrication.  When there is no fuel, the pump dies quickly.

 

As an example, my truck has two fuel tanks, so two fuel pumps, and the warranty for one of the pumps I put in said that the warranty was void if the pump was run for 3 seconds without fuel....

Yup.  Don't be running it below 1/4 of a tank on any car.

Any fuel that isn't burned my the engine is sent back into the bucket to help cool the pump and for the pick. It's really tough to burn up a fuel pump from low fuel.

 

Roughly 4-5 gallons of fuel is left in my truck. My normal avg for gallons is around 19-20 and the light hasn't come on yet.

Sure, if you don't run the tank empty enough to get the low fuel warning, you won't burn up your fuel pump.

 

That is literally the opposite of what is being discussed.

Definitely, my buddy learned the hard way and cost him a pump.

How so?

 

She asked how long can you go when the light comes on. With mine I said I have 4-5 gallons left, then you have to do some math to figure out your distance but I didn't think I'd have to type that. If you got 20mpg, that's 80-90 miles until you're out. OR if it was 15mpg, that's only 60-70 miles until it's empty.

 

Even with 4-5 gallons left and the light on, you won't burn the pump out and that is WAY below the 1/4 tank mark on the fuel gauge. Maybe with 1-2 gallons left, the cooling ability will start to be far less because that little amount of fuel will heat up much quicker.

The problem is- is that when the fuel has gotten that low, the cooling properties of any fuel that is returned is going to be extremely low, which means all it's doing is returning hot fuel.  So DON'T DO IT!  PERIOD!

We are all aware of a problem it could cause if you let it get extremely low. Nothing bad will happen with several gallons left when the light just come on. If it was truly a HUGE issue there would be shops full of cars every single day with gravy work for fuel pumps and shops would be making a killing.

 

Nothing wrong with filling up at 1/4 tank, knock yourself out but it's not a death sentence to the pump at that point.

Someone forgot to tell my wife that, or either the fuel tank has an air conditioner duct blowing on the pump.  300000+ miles on the original fuel pump in an 05 Tahoe and she NEVER refuels until the fuel range on the DIC shows LOW.

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
