So, a few months back I cut an extra airbox that I had. With the stock air filter, everything was fine. With a K&N, I got a message about my air filter quite often. i would reset and it would come back. So, I put the stock box back on and went on my way.

Recently, I was looking at intakes for the truck and I found several people that got that message with their intakes and they just cleared it from the dash. HA HA, why didn't I think of that?

Today, i reinstalled the cut lower airbox and filmed it for your viewing pleasure.

Just a free mod anyone can do. i chose that area to cut because it is opposite the engine and it is covered by the fenderwell to keep out additional debris. All previous trucks, I cut the airbox as well but this one wasn't like the others because of the snorkel that bottlenecks at the radiator area.

 Extra power? I don't know

More noise - it has a little bit more growl to it. I like it, very subtle.

Do I like it ? Absolutely !

Put this in with your exhaust valve mod and you have 2 really cool free mods !

So it's just sucking in hot, dirty, underhood air?

Pass.

Factory air intake and all the good aftermarket ones are sealed in and sucking in cooler external air for a reason.

I respect your opinion on this, it's definitely not for everyone and I only did it because I had the extra box.

To reply to your assumptions, with my scantool hooked up I have not seen this "hot air" you speak of. The air it is getting is from behind the head light, just above the fenderwell.

If you look at the S&B intake, it has openings about 8" above where I made my cut out and is sucking air from the same spot. Is it "Dirty", that's unknown at this point but in time I will see on the air filter.

If driving down a dirt road, yeah, it's likely grabbing dusty dirty air, that is however, no different than being behind someone on a dirty road with a fully enclosed factory box.

Did this on my 2015, however I did the cheese grater mod and a 2” hole with a foam prefilter. Drilled out the baffle. Then Air raid MIT with a afe pro dry S. Never had debris or crazy amount of dust. I drove in the desert a lot too. Once my headers and catback were on and I tuned it that 5.3 was a monster. Big fan of the mod, but after it was said and done, cost of the tube and filter and work would’ve been about the same as doing a CAI.

I’m younger days I always added aftermarket cold air boxes along with exhaust. Didn’t really care if it add performance, I wanted the sound. Did hand held tunes too. I noticed my air boxes were similar between models. So I did the drill mod on my 04 to open the air box. Then I bought rubber plugs to plug it if I didn’t want the noise usually on trips. Bought super trapp mufflers for the same reason. Put a drop in K&N or Amsoil filter and was good to go. Didn’t see or feel any difference between the 02 with the after market and my 04 cheap mods.
