Newbie looking for advice

Hey all, 

 

I'm Crunchy, and I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terrain with the 5.3L engine. I'm looking to get a little more power out of my truck and was wondering what the best route would be to achieve this. I am thinking that Intake, Exhaust, and Programmer are probably the most common combination of mods that people do. But what ones are the most highly recommended? Thank you all in advance for any and all responses, and I apologize if I'm beating a dead horse with this post.

Out of what you listed, a tune is going to make the biggest difference not just with power but overall drivability of the truck. Better throttle response, better transmission behavior, better fuel economy, the list goes on.

 

Look up Blackbear, Diablew, and I’ve seen a few others that people have had good results with. The handheld tuners are okay at best so I wouldn’t waste your money unless you go with Diablew which he uses a Diablo tuner to log and get the tunes on your truck.

 

I had my 2015 5.3 crewcab tuned by Blackbear using their AutoCal service a few months and couldn’t be happier. My mods are TSP longtubes with a 3” Borla catback and an Airaid Jr intake. Justin(Blackbear) has tuned a bunch of trucks over the years. He general knows actually what you’re looking for.

It's a topic that has been talked about for a while, so there is enough out there to read and get information from.

 

The intake and exhaust stuff is always preference and what you want to spend. I'm not a fan of intakes without a sealed box because you just end up taking in hot engine bay air. So either get an Airaid Intake tube that keeps the stock airbox and remove the stock intake tube/hammer head baffle or get a full intake with seal box. Either are going to perform the exact same way. The stock airbox is not a restriction on a stock 5.3/6.2 engine.

 

Exhaust is down to what you want for sound. A $400 Dynomax system will do the same thing as a $1200 Borla system. It's just pipe with a muffler, you are paying for quality of materials and the name. Mainly the name because the upcharge on some of these systems is laughable, it doesn't cost $500+ more in material to make some of this stuff.

That’s exactly why I went with the Airaid Jr. I like the fact that it still uses your stock air box. It definitely cleans up the engine bay but I can’t say it did much for power. Maybe slightly better throttle response .
