The LEDs tend to provide a more focused beam and modern ones are generally brighter than halogens. The original bulbs probably would shine up the tailgate if they had enough output.
I’m about to switch mine over, on my AT4. We might have to play around a bit with the clear lens to blackout a portion to control the light. Maybe try with a piece of electrical tape to see where you need the cutoffs?

A lot of the 194 LEDs are just too bright. If you’re using a bulb that looks like most of the cheap ones on Amazon, that’s the problem. There’s nothing to diffuse that light and there’s too much light anyway.

I bought some regular Sylvania LEDs which are not designed to be so bright and have a frosted “lens” to diffuse the light more. They have been working fine and don’t light up the tailgate like a billboard.

I piece a black vinyl, stick it on the lens and play around with it until you like it, then peel and stick.

I used ones from Autozone.  I’ve gotten the ones from Amazon and they all seem to stop working too soon.

the ones from Autozone have lasted a few years.

I replaced mine with LED’s from Walmart. I would guess they are Sylvania bulbs as well. I don’t have any issues with mine. They look great.
