Wanting to switch to 4.10s from stock 3.42

Truck is 4wd so doing both front and rear. Wondering what’s needed to do other than ring and pinion gear and what kind of brand is best

You can contact East Coast Gear Supply. They have been great to deal with. They will let you know what you need without you getting stuff you just don't need.

Gears and bearings is pretty much it for parts. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get a better rear locker and not use the factory G80 anymore.

Yukon gears are also another good place to buy stuff from.

Yukon has a 3.73 for the 9.76, anything over that I would go with what bash74 said. Has something to do with fitting gears for the 9.5 into a 9.76. But as long as your rear end isn't a 9.76 you shouldn't have issues finding gears anywhere.

Does anyone make a locker for the 9.76? I looked into it a little while ago but couldn't come up with anything. It would be nice if there was a truetrac that would fit.

9.76? I’m assuming thats the diff for the 6.2?

They also had the 6l80, 6.2, 3.73 combo for the 2014 MY only in sierra/silverado

Yeah 9.76 is for the 6.2 8spd, or 5.3 max tow 2015+. I think the 14's had the 9.5. imo oem is the way to go, but 3.42 is the highest they have for the 9.76.

Nope, just confirmed my 2014 6.2 has a 9.76, its stamped on the diff. Also confirmed with numerous other posts in this forum. From what I understand all 6.2’s are 9.76

I have the 3.42. They did offer the 2014 only 6.2 with 3.73 gears with the max tow package.

Which should mean in 2014 only, you can get a 9.76” diff with 3.73’s from the factory.

unless of course for the 6.2 max tow they actually went to the 9.5” diff. Which would be strange

I'm really confused now... I don't doubt you, if its on your truck, its on your truck. For some reason I thought you couldn't get 3.73's for the 9.76. Maybe they stopped producing the part? I'll have to look into it

Looks like I might be getting some 3.73's, lol.

The improvement from 3.23 to 3.73 with tires that measure out just a hair under 35” is very good. The drive-ability improvement is great. I ran the numbers a while ago, with the swap, the truck performs as it would’ve with stock height tires if it had been equipped with a 3.46 ratio. This is just where the math calculations would’ve put the gearing. The truck runs much better- stoplight to stoplight. Any feeling of “lugging” is gone. Mileage picked up a bit for in city driving. Highway performance is back where it should be and the truck sees 8th gear much more often. All in all a great improvement without having to swap the internals down to the 9.5” set up.

No i have 3.42 and 9.76

I don’t have max tow. Max tow should have 3.73 with 9.76 for 2014

    • I use Amsoil's OE line of motor oil (5W20) in our 19 Hyundai Santa Fe. I noticed today on the web site it now says (47% more wear protection1 than required by the GM dexos1 Gen 2 specification). Maybe I  missed it but I don't think so.
    • The amount of storage in the rear seat area is huge. You can keep all your cycle gear dry and clean back there
    • Truck in fluid changes and investigate subtle shudder at cruising speeds.  Told them it felt like my ‘14’s shudder when AFM kicked in.   Dealer #1 :  You need a new torque converter.   6 weeks later, after causing other damages to my truck, I get the truck back.  Same shudder exists. New, more violent shifts and vibrations at low speed.  After choice words and a few more weeks of waiting for them to replace my running boards supports, I move on to another Dealer.   Dealer #2:  The cruising speed shudder is DFM.  (I didn’t realize truck had it.) The TCM/ECM needs updates.  Updates will solve all vibration issues.   They perform updates, truck seemed ok in lot.  Not a mile down the road, SERVICE BRAKE PAD MONITOR. Dealer #1 stated brakes were at 4mm.   took truck back to Dealer #2, rear brakes at 2mm and less than 1mm.     New pads/rotors on rear, new pads up front.   truck seems good. Toggle through menus, brake monitor system is disabled.  Huh?  Why? Turn that sucker on : SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM!     will not reset manually, automatically, or even after pulling negative bat cable for 30min.     Could the TCM/ECM updates the culprit?    A torque converter diagnosis for a “normal” shudder and now I’m thousands in the hole and the truck still isn’t right!  Beyond pissed.
    • Your right on. 👍🏻
    • Seats matter a lot.  I would start there - good advise here.  I had a 2018 LT Colorado before my 2026 LT Silverado, and the seats are so much better in the new one it's not even a contest.  That was one thing I always hated about the Colorado and I owned two of them spanning 10 years - but I did it so I could park in the garage mainly.  Now I have a much larger property and a huge barn so I have plenty of parking options and a full size is more useful for maintaining the property and current hobbies as well.  I wasn't evenb thinking about the seats as part of the reason for the move to the Silverado, but after two back to back 700mile road trips I am sold on the LT seats w/ leather 100%.  The other LT features are also nice - one thing I really like is the power rear window on the back window by the bed.  And the lighting in the bed is also very nice to have - I doubt that comes on the lower models.  Power tailgate - also quite useful - it's a heavy slug!  What else - I could take or leave the screen - but heated seats and steering wheel and cruise control on the steering wheel is very useable - I would never want to live without that.  Even the colorados had that.
