Diff fluid change

Ok I know this is going to shock everyone...but Jon (Chevy4x4Trucks) actually did some work yesterday!!!  He came down to help me change out my Mom's front brakes (provide the jack & stands), but Autozone was out of the pads.  We ended up changing the rear diff fluid in both my Mom's van and my Blazer.   Put Mobil 1 75W-90 in hers, and I put Valvoline Durablend 80W-90 in mine, because it looks like the seals are about to leak.  I think some of Tom is rubbing off on Jon because right after we got the first cover off Jon asked if I wanted to paint it chrome, so off to the paint store we went.  My Mom's differential cover came out looking great, nice and smooth, its from a 2000 Dodge conversion van w/ 24,500 miles and my Blazers came out looking like we spread some aluminium foil on it that we crumpled up and tried to straighten out again.  Looks like I'm in for a new diff cover soon!  While I was at the autoparts store I thought I remembered seeing on here that you shouldn't use RTV sealant, so I picked up some Hylomar stuff.  I got back on here and saw that RTV is alright, but used hte Hylomar anyways.  It is non hardening though, it's like a gel, but it says it can be used on diff covers.  No leaks on either one last night a few hours after we did it, haven't been out to check yet this morning but I just rolled out of bed.

yeah, well, I just thought to myself W.W.T.D. (What Would Tom Do?) and we had to pick up some chrome paint for them.  They both actually turned out fairly decently.  I wish I had my grinder and a wire wheel with me to get Joe's diff cover nice and smooth, but it doesn't look too bad for surviving 7 winters in the salt belt.

Thanks Jon, normal list price doesn't look bad at all from my local dealership so whoever your ordered it from online should be a tad bit better.  I ran out this morning and picked up a case of brake cleaner :withstupid:.  Now I got lots!

LOL! That's a good one.  :withstupid:

But, I didn't use that "chrome" paint.  I used Rustoleum "Metalized Aluminum" on the diff cover and the skid plate.  (probably the same thing though)

yeah, it looks basically the same.  We used a silver paint for a few base coats and then two coats of chrome bumper paint.  It has a nice shine to it, now I can just picture Joe crawling underneath the truck everytime he washes it to wash and wax the diff cover  :withstupid:

Ya right...me get under there and wash and wax my diff cover :withstupid:.  I gotta get under there soon, there is some mud stuck on the front half of my frame that I've been itching to get off, I gotta scrub it though it wouldn't all come off after a high pressure hose hit it.
