2020 Silverado L84, 12800 miles.

Today on the highway going about 80mpg and letting off the throttle a little the check engine light started flashing then stopped, came back on while getting off the ramp flashing 2 or 3 times then went away. No messages on the dash or reduced performance, no new knocks ticks or vibrations. Using Shell 87 for fuel. No onstar alerts either, I have gotten 1 for the airbag system when the steering wheel bag was replaced a while back(I hit the horn too hard on the side and broke the horn switch and mounting bracket while avoiding an accident).

 

Anyway

Went to the dealer and they pulled P0300 Random/Multiple cylinder misfire detected Failure code:00 Status: Test Failed since code cleared

No active codes are noted just stored

 

They said without diag, obviously, they can't point at any one issue. They said if it's not doing anything in front of them the probably can't find anything anyway but I am free to let them look at it later if needed.

 

My plan is as per their recommendation to wait and see if it happens again, light comes on and stays, messages appear, or any performance or other concerns are noted.

 

My thoughts are that it was probably just a glitch with the DFM system and PCM not agreeing on what cylinder was supposed to be firing and when.

Put the truck thru its paces and it takes off smooth and nothing seems wrong with it.

Knock on wood it stays that way.

 

Anybody have something similar happen?

I had that happen to my 2021 GMC Sierra SLT with 5.3. It happened 3 times so far, each time it flashed for a few seconds and the blinking light shut off when i got on the gas.

The first time around 1,000 miles 3 weeks ago (engine was warm) and the last two times it happened this Friday ( engine warmed up) and Tuesday morning (cold engine) around 1,400 miles. It runs and drives normal, the dealer said they cant do anything since the light is off and it makes no weird noises and cleared the code history.

They had a couple of trucks come in 2 weeks ago due to misfires and rough idle and all of them filled up with gas at costco, i also only put 87 at costco for mine, ill try different gas this time.

I always shut off the start stop every time i drive it, i wonder if it is a glitch in the computer. i'm debating installing the PULSAR and see if it continues to happen after i try new gas first.

I just had a similar issue tonight, but I have the L87.  Driving southbound on I-15 from Vegas, headed to San Diego.  While dropping down into Baker, CA, cruise control was set at 78 mph.  Time was approximately 10:30pm.  Outside temp was 95°.  AC was off because sunroof and rear window were open.  Engine temp was normal, oil pressure was normal, and trans temp was 147°.  Just me in the truck, and no payload nor trailer.  Southbound I-15 dropping into Baker, CA is a steep decline.  Iirc, 6% for several miles.  The mountain pass parks at over 4,000 feet, and Baker is below 1,000 feet.  Due to no reportable issues with the truck I continued to drive, but immediately closed the windows, turned on the AC, and pressed the OnStar button.  OnStar ran a check for codes and didn't find a single one.  

 

One thing to note:  this is the 2nd time I've had an issue with the truck on this exact same stretch of highway, and both times it was 90°+ outside.  Cruise is always set at 8 mph over the posted limit, and it only happens while going downhill.  I've made this same trip several times over the last year, but outside temperatures were much milder, and nothing happened during those trips. 

 

Imo, no point in taking the truck to the dealer since they won't find any codes to help them.  So I guess that just leaves me to being curious what everybody thinks.  If it's happening to both the L84 and L87, then it's probably associated to something common for both engines.

I had the same problem with my 2021 1500 Sierra AT4 5.3.  Bad lifter arms which are on backorder.  Truck only has 3,600 miles and now it sits at the dealer.

Happened again today, same part of the highway, going 83 and coasting, temp is 93 feels like is 100 with no breeze or clouds, similar to the first time it did it.

stayed on for about 30 seconds but didn’t seem sluggish or reduced power and no onstar alert. 14400 miles.

 

May take it in and see what they say this time, idk yet.

My truck has flashed the SEL light about 15 times in 5800 miles. Always once truck is warmed up for the day, always around 0-20mph and usually after making a turn out of my development or leaving my work. Always light on the throttle when it occurs. Interesting thing though, I decided to drive around in L9 for a month and it never went off once. It always does it when in D. 

 

If you can get it to flash the light twice in a row it will throw a solid SEL light. But it has to be within a few engine warm-ups or miles. Mine always seems to do it after  sitting for 30min-3hrs and then within 1/4 mile of leaving wherever I am. It's never done it while driving at speed. Also, I absolutely believe it's related to DFM hence why when driving in L9 it doesn't flash the light. 

 

I took it in for the 5 or 6th time this past Thursday when the light was solid, they openly admit they don't know what to do with it and neither does GM's engineers. I called gmc Thursday night to see what they're going to do about this. I'm due a call back from the investigator by Wednesday next week. I'm pushing for 100k engine warranty if they want me to keep it.

Well figured I would update this again

Happened today, 26260 miles

same part of the same highway going 75-80, 96 degrees and AC on full blast.

Slowed down and it would go away. Stayed on for 30 seconds or so and stopped

no codes active.

Maybe I will have it reprogrammed, idk.

Mine was fixed by a CPU update back in 10/21. Hasn't done it since. Make sure they follow the directions to the T provided in the bulletin.

I just stopped by the dealer on my way home from work and talked with the SA that I actually trust since it did it for the fourth time. She pulled the codes and found the p0300 again.

We looked at the tsb 21-na-154 and setup the appt in a few weeks, obv they’re gonna do a diag first then go from there but hopefully that fixes it.

 

it’s supposed to be brutally hot for the next few weeks so it’ll probably happen a few more times

 

And there no loss of power or knocking/ticking so that’s good news.

Another update

saw an alert on my onstar app for engine, transmission, stabilitrac, abs, and airbag

called onstar and no codes are showing on their diag report, also no cel.

decided to get a BlueDriver obd scanner overnighted by Amazon, my OBDLink was showing no codes at all, BlueDriver pulled the p0300, as well as u0102, u0131. u0140 and u0403. 🤦🏻‍♂️
found another tsb that has all but the u0403 on it. Based on the code names I don’t think it would be that far of a leap for it to set as well. 21-na-149 engine wire harness chaffing

 

calling the dealer in the am, moving the appt up to asap from in a few weeks when it would be convenient. Figures

 

I’ll keep this updated for anyone that may be going through something similar, especially since there’s 4.2k views as of this post.

Just had 21-na-154 performed

Dealer said that the U codes weren’t able to be retrieved on their scanners, just the p0300 and the codes for the led turn signals

They think it may be an issue with the BlueDriver, however they did see a long history of misfires being recorded.

Hello to the group. I'm new here and was hoping I could get some idea as to what happened on my 20 Sierra SLT. I was on the interstate and passed going around 80 mph. Right afterwards I was back to 75 and suddenly the CE light started flashing and the dash had flashing message "Service Parking Brake". This went on for about 30 seconds and disappeared. I could feel some subtle jerking as I pulled off at the next exit. Felt like the trans (10 speed) was searching for a gear. As I began to put on the brakes there was more profound jerking like the parking brake was pulsing.
Everything on this truck is electronic including the parking brake.

I have an OBD tester and it pulled codes P0300 (Random, multiple cylinder misfire), U0401 (Invalid Data Received From ECM/PCM "A"), U0131 (Lost Communication With Power Steering Control Module), U0102 (Lost Communication with Transfer Case Control Module) and U0140 (Lost Communication With Body Control Module).

I shut the vehicle off and checked under the hood but everything still looks pretty new under there. Checked for loose wires and didn't detect any. I went directly to the dealer and they said they would need to have their engine specialist diagnose it but couldn't get me in until 3/23. The truck ran much better on the way to the dealer and now runs like nothing ever happened. Full power and smooth. WTH!! Any ideas folks? I'm not sure anyone has experienced this exact issue but would appreciate any ideas. Thank you

 

Update: the issue above happened on 3/8/2023. The truck was running normal until 4/3/2023 when the CE light started flashing again and this time the code was P0308 (cylinder 8 misfire) On shortly thereafter the light went out and ran normal again. I took it to the dealer who performed diagnostic and said the issue was fouled plugs. They replaced the plugs and all seemed fine until yesterday the CE came on again with a P0300 and runs like crap. Runs worse than ever. This seems to be a widespread occurrence in these vehicles. Has anyone had this resolved?

I had all of those issues weeks before my lifters went and then bent a pushrod.

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
