Truck is a 2020 Yukon XL Denali.  This is a used but new-to-me truck.  

 

I confirmed in the settings that the handsfree is selected "on"

 

As title says, my handsfree liftgate is not working and I'm looking for guidance as to where to start troubleshooting the issue.  I crawled under the bumper this morning but could not visually identify a sensor.  Where should I start looking to chase down the issue?  

 

It should be noted that when I picked up the truck, it was missing the tow-hitch cover and the very bottom of the bumper, directly below the hitch where the bottom of the hitch cover normally attaches, was broken.  Previous owner had backed into something.  Wondering if this might affect the hands-free operation.

The hitch cover shouldn't affect anything, it's just a piece of plastic. The sensors themselves can be a bit fickle in terms of getting exactly the right angle and motion. You have to move your foot in and out very quickly, not hold it. Took me a long time to get it down.

Thanks.  Do you know where the sensors are located?  Wondering if mine have been impacted somehow.

Sounds like you have tried some of these, but maybe something missed?

 

The sensor is located in different positions on the various models that offer the hands-free power liftgate. (Fig. 7)

 

• Full-size SUVs — Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade — and Cadillac CT6: sensor is located under the center of the rear bumper.

 XT5 and Acadia: sensor is located behind the driver’s side rear tire on the side of the rear bumper.

• Envision, Equinox, and the upcoming Terrain, Traverse, and Enclave: sensor is located under the left side of the rear bumper, between the left exhaust pipe and the center of the bumper.

Operating the Liftgate

 

To open or close the power liftgate hands-free, swing your foot in a direct in-and-out motion (your foot should be under the rear bumper for less than one second) in the proximity of the sensor. (Fig. 😎 The motion must be within five inches of the sensor. Do not swing your leg in a sweeping or side-to-side motion.

 

To activate the power liftgate, the Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (key fob) must be within 3 feet (1 meter) of the liftgate.

The hands-free feature will not work while the liftgate is moving. Use one of the liftgate switches to stop the liftgate while in motion.

 

The hands-free feature also may be temporarily disabled under some conditions. If the liftgate does not respond to the kicking motion, open or close the liftgate by another method or start the vehicle. The feature will be re-enabled.

 

Projected Logo

 

Some 2018 models feature a vehicle logo that is projected onto the ground under the rear bumper sensor that indicates where the kicking motion should take place. The logo is projected when the key fob is detected within 6 feet (2 meters) of the liftgate.

 

Under normal conditions, the logo will be projected for one minute. If the logo is not projected, check for the following operating conditions:

 The projected logo is only available for the currently used key fob after it has been out of range for at least 20 seconds.

 If a key fob is again detected within approximately 6 feet (2 meters) of the liftgate, or another hands-free operation has been detected, the one-minute timer is reset. If it is reset five times in 10 minutes, the logo will not turn back on for one hour. This provides the battery with a “cool-down period” to preserve its charge.

 If the vehicle remains parked for an extended period of time with no key fob use or Keyless Access operation, the projected vehicle logo will be disabled. The projected logo will be re-enabled when any key fob button is pressed, any vehicle door is opened and closed, or the liftgate is closed when all doors are opened.

 The projected logo will not work for a single key fob when a key fob has been left within approximately 15 feet (5 meters) of the liftgate for several minutes, has been left inside the vehicle and all vehicle doors are closed, or has approached the area outside of the liftgate several times in a short period of time.

 

Users can customize hands-free operation. The kick function can be turned off, only open the liftgate, or open and close the liftgate. To change the kick function:

1. Select the Hands-free Liftgate Control menu on the infotainment screen under Settings > Vehicle > Comfort and Convenience.

2. Select Off, On-Open Only, or On-Open and Close.

 

Selecting Off will disable hands-free control of the liftgate and keep the logo lamp off.

Does it have a switch in the center headliner console to turn off the lift gate?  Our suburban does and if that is in the off position the kick open will not work.

Did OP ever figure out the problem? Same thing happening to my 2022 Chevy Trailblazer, shouldn't be having this issue after 5 months of ownership right off the truck.

Try changing the battery in the FOB. I had the same issue. My FOB was operational, but wasn't allowing my handsfree to open the lift gate. Spoke to my sales person and he recommended I change the battery in the FOB. Work perfectly again.  A few dollars fix that you can do yourself.

Try changing the battery in the key FOB. Had the same problem. Changed the battery (a few dollars) and all is well again. Better than paying a $175 diagnostic fee.

    • I would have to read back to get a better picture in my mind of some of the other comments and what they were using for a driving scenario they based the fuel mileage off of. That is why the fuel mileage conversation is extremely difficult to make fair comparisons from. If I was to be living in town and only driving around town, light to light and some longer stretches that doesn't have a light every block, and the usual stop at a grocery store and the bank and so on and so forth, my fuel mileage even during the summer time would be so bad with my truck I don't even want to know how bad it would be !. Then add in winter time and idling to warm it up to clear the windows and driving through snowy streets etc, large heavy trucks with gas engines have NEVER been worth crap for fuel mileage and why some little pot licker of a car with wheelbarrow tires and a 1300 cc four cylinder non turbo engine was the ticket to using a mere fraction of the fuel over a full size pickup.    By the way my truck has the 34" tires as its a HC but not the BFG KO3 tires ( that was an option for my truck but the sales guy couldn't figure out what the tires actually were so that never got on the order until it was too late to change the truck order ). So what fuel mileage your getting actually sounds good for "town driving" and with my truck when I go to town the fuel mileage keeps increasing as I get closer to town because it takes quite a while to get the driveline oils warmed up ( and why it always shows better fuel mileage on the return trip from town because its already warmed up ) but once I am in town that fuel mileage average just keeps dropping the more I mess around town and then has to recover back to something reasonable again by the time I get home for an over all average.    I'd be curious what your sticker says for the factory weight of your truck, mine is close around that 7700 lb due to the options it has. But anyway the long and short is, vehicle weight, higher rolling resistance heavy tires and a hefty driveline and a relatively large gas engine make for crap fuel mileage in stop and go scenarios, all one can do is drive it easy off the line at each stop and as my dad had said over the years, drive like a raw egg is under your foot and that's the best one can do. Years back with a carbed engine and if the carb was getting a bit out of tune etc as would the ignition system, the fuel mileage on pickups with larger engines was just awful compared to what your getting. We pay the fuel price penalty for driving HD trucks over some little vehicle, that is the reality. 
    • We had two Toyota’s with that engine in the mid 80s. We had 50 gallon fuel tanks, a toolbox full of tools, an air compressor and assorted parts for our equipment. We beat those up and down pipeline ROWs until we started buying diesel trucks. Then they became parts runners and first vehicles for our teenagers first cars. Our shop Forman wrecked them both two years apart when we hired him out of high school as an apprentice. Good thing he’s an excellent mechanic. It took awhile before he could be called a good driver.
    • I have a 2025 GMC Canyon Denali.   On a trip recently the engine failed.  The dealership diagnosed a bent valve and says there is a service bulletin that indicates to 'relace the engine'.  The truck only has about 14K miles and is under warranty.   The failure occurred 5/11/2026.   So far I have worked with GM Customer Assistance and Roadside Assistance.  Evidently no engines are available and nobody will offer a date when a new one will be.   Coming up on two months with no repair or timeline and no loaner from the dealership.   GMC Customer Assistance is 'ghosting' me and keeps closing the cases I've opened with no resolution.   Hoping someone can help me on how to escalate this issue.
