2012 Silverado 5.3L with intermittent "service stabiltrak / traction control" warning lights, door-lock control cycling, and transmission shifting issues?

Hello, all!

My 2012 Silverado recently began displaying an intermittent "Service Stabiltrak" and/or "Service Traction Control" control-panel light. This is often accompanied by the vehicle's door locks cycling on/off. It also happens in conjunction with a general decrease in power, as well as the truck's transmission shifting up/down in range with very hard, "jerky" shifts. This will stop for a half-hour or so if I pull off the road and stop for a few minutes before resuming again. I have had one of the rear-wheel stabiltrak sensor units replaced, but this did nothing at all to alleviate the problem. I've seen enough blog entries to know that Stabiltrak issues are apparently a widespread and well-known problem with GM vehicles. Does anyone have any feedback in regard to a FIX that worked for their Silverado upon encountering this Stabiltrak/traction control" light issue and associated problems? Thanks in advance for any constructive opinions!

I would need a scan tool on it to see exactly why it's throwing these codes. Without one we are just guessing at the problem.

Thanks for your response, Cam. But the Silverado never throws any codes when this happens.

A high end scan tool that can read ABS and Stabilitrak codes would see something if the lights came on. You won't get a check engine light code for things like this.

I bought an Actron CP9680 which can read manufacturer drivetrain codes. I found out the 4wd selector switch on the dash was bad which is a common part failure that causes the Service Stabilitrak error message. The wiring on the back of the switch degrades and the faulty connections send incorrect voltage back to the transfer case control module resulting in the dash error. The dash selector is around $25 and takes 5 minutes to replace. The Actron can be bought on Amazon and is well worth the investment.
