looking at upgrading from a 1996 c1500 to a 2010-2013 4x4 Silverado 1500 but curious if this platform is a good rock crawling vehicle. not going over anything crazy but my daily driver is a subaru outback with 7.5" of clearance cant go up a few of my hunting trails. not looking to modify too heavily since it mostly will be a daily driver maybe just a 2" lift, light bar and skid plates. just seeing what current owners of this platform have run into.

They can do a lot more than people give them credit for.  When I think of rock crawling, a sand rail looking rig with giant tires comes to mind.  A stock truck can outperform a Suburu.  They are used for overlanding and mountain trails all over the country and off-roading and playing in the mud and crossing streams and even sand dunes in the United States and over in Arabia where it's very popular to off-road these.

Most of my experience off-road with these comes from the wagons but the drivetrains are identical with different rear suspension.  Search YouTube videos for Silverados, Sierras, Avalanches, Tahoes, Yukons, etc.

If you desire, get one with the 6.2 motor.  No AFM and 403 horsepower.  Many All-Terrain Sierras came with 6.2s and they have 3.42 gears.  Quite rare, there is a variant with the Max Towing Package, can tow over 10K pounds.  This may not be so important for going off-road but they come with a heavier rear spring pack and 3.73 gears.  6.2 pickups run 14s in the quarter too btw stock!

Are you looking for an extended cab or a crew cab or a regular cab?

I am looking for the biggest 4 door there is for those years since kid number 1 is on its way which is why I am getting rid of my 2 door C1500. I believe that would be the crew cab not the extended cab.

I would start with a Colorado 4x4 platform

my c1500 was considered a full size pick up for its day and now its more like a medium/small but it has a towing capacity if 6500 lbs and i need it for my trailer looked online and the 2010 colorado was a max of 6000 lbs so id rather not go backwards my trailer is anywhere from 3000-4000 lbs depending on the trip.

With an Extended Cab, you can put a car seat up front and there is a keyed switch in the glove box to disable the airbags but the CC is much more convenient and mom doesn't have to ride in the back!
