Rear axle seal leak

I noticed today while rotating my tires that my passenger rear axle seal is leaking. The truck has 37,673 miles on it. I’m going to call the dealer tomorrow to see if its covered under the power train warranty. The book says it is, but you never know. I was posting this to see if anyone else has dealt with this and if they got any push back from the dealer about it.

I could see it being covered under the 3/36 warranty but nothing past that. I've replaced axle seals on trucks with far less than 100,000 miles on the powertrain and before the 5 year period.

 

Seen lots of them just "wet" before and we would just clean them up, it could take another 20,000 miles to look the same is some cases.

Is this a common issue with this gen?

It happens, just put it that way. There are probably a few million of these trucks and axles out there by now, leaks with will happen.

check the axle vent, on my truck it was the cause of weeping seals

Thanks for the info @CamGTP and @silveradosid. I called the dealer this morning and they did say that the seal is covered by the power train warranty. It’s getting dropped off tonight so they can look at it tomorrow.

Wheel bearing may be trashed and took the seal out.

Just got a call from the dealer. It was the seal and everything else including the bearing were fine. It is covered under the power train warranty so I don’t have to pay for anything. I dropped it off last night and it should be finished by the end of today. I’m happy.

Glad it is all taken care of.  I'm on some Jeep pages on FB and the rear axle leaks are way more than they should be. Even on those that are never taken off road.  Crazy to see this since solid axles have been around for such a long time.  Not sure what makes the Jeeps axles any different than most.

The bad thing is that I changed the rear dif fluid using Amsoil at 30,000 miles. I’ll change it back to that at 60,000 miles.
