Occasionally my gauge reading drops to about 10-12v. this can happen while idling or driving. 95% of the time it reads above 14v. I can't find a pattern or cause. I'm thinking maybe my voltage regulator or the alternator itself my be going? Any ideas?

in for an answer.  i have a 2011 Silverado 5.3 and mine does the same thing.

Normal.  Computer regulated charging system.  ECM and BCM can alter the state of charge based on loads, temperatures, etc.

I wonder what the diagnostic tree looks like to check for a bad alternator wth that system

I have a 2011 GMC.  I noticed the same.  I asked the dealer about it when I went for an oil change.  His response was quick, which told me that he'd been asked that a lot.  He said, "yes, it will do that".  Its normal.  A non-issue.
