so my truck went from silent to lifter tap to silent again , like I said on few other oil post , I have try almost every popular high quality oils over the years, I have come across this valvoline oil I did some research and looked good from the additive prospective so I decide to try it I'm my hemi ram, first impression was good I took the truck for a ride and run great and smooth, but after the first cold start I heard the lifter tap on start up for few sec, I though nothing of it until I fire it up again and then tap was there again and again and again for a month until I said F%#@ this S%@t and I dump the oil, went back to pennzoil platinum and the hemi was purring like a kitten again the tap is completely gone just like it was B4 valvoline, im not suggesting that the valvoline is a bad oil but I just wanted to share my experience with it, I do not know why my hemi was having slight lifter tap on start up using valvoline oil. I will continue to use pennzoil in my new GMC 6.2 I hope the chevy will respond as good as my hemi with that oil, I do think that pennzoil make one of the best quality oil on the market right now.

Redline is pretty much the ultimate silencer for Hemis. When using the factory spec Pennzoil Ultra Platinum it would get pretty ticky shortly into the OCI. Redline just stays quiet. Plus it’s pretty much the finest oil money can buy, and a true, actual synthetic.

I have use redline and sure is great oil, but my experience with pennzoil is just as great for the friction of the price , no tick not a tap on start up.

Why do you think some oils are cheaper? Where do you think they cut the corners? Did they use cheaper oil base stocks and additive packages? Did they cut back on quality control? How can they afford to spends millions of $$ on advertising and still make money if they claim their oil is best?

all I can say is the oil is working great for me. that hemi is happier than pig eating ****** running pennzoil.

Pennzoil just as great as Redline, I don't think so.

The VOAs I had done would tend to disagree. The Redline on it’s face is a much more robust oil. Both in additive and base oil composition. Note these are comparing Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w40 to Redline HP 0w40. Not the regular Pennzoil Platinum. I know redline is a great oil I have use it b4, but the truck is very happy running pennzoil, I have use this oil for many year and will continue to use it in my new AT4, any blackstone test I have see returned great results.

I can't think of a single reason why 'lifter tick' would happen with one oil and not the other. Both oils are in the same viscosity range and grade. 🤔

In my case the Redline cST @ 100 is 14.72 vs 12.76 on the PUP. Could it be a similar (albeit small) difference between OP’s Pennzoil and Valvoline accounting for the increased noise? Or different coefficient of friction?

 

I don’t know but there are too many reports of this being the case to not think there is something going on.

The HP is not even API certified, let alone Dexos. Professional Series meets both though. I tend to worry more about the protection and not a license. 
 

Anyway, sorry about the Redline diversion, just wanted to make note that it was the quietest oil I’ve run and most people agree when they try it.

I do not know, the reason I went to try valvoline because I see a blackstone and moly was way higher than the pennzoil , but to my surprise every time I shot down my truck and let it cool down the lifters would be bleed out and they would tick until pressures again, the pennzoil never ever one did that b4 .

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
