My 2013 Silverado 1500 2WD 4.8L W/T (bought w/43K) has @52K on it, and it is my towing vehicle. Normally it sits for weeks or months... 17MPG does that... Anyways, this spring it started to intermittently squeal. All you have to do is press on the brake pedal, ever so slightly, and the squeal disappears. When you let off the brake pedal, the squeal returns a few seconds later.

I took it to a local shop a few weeks ago, and the mechanic said my rear brakes looked new, the front should last another 50k. Blew the spider nests and debris out of my calipers and re-installed everything. Now the squealing is back. Not grinding, pedal is firm, no pulsing. It gets loud.

From reading the posts on this forum, it seems either / or pin lubrication, caliper lubrication, or pad composition is a/the problem. What should I tell the mechanic to do / check?

remove the pads and coat the backs with anti squeal goo, make sure the shims are secure, replace the anti rattle hardware or just replace the pads and clean the rust off the rotors. have some1 walk beside the truck to determine front or back

Agreed with Richard however; coating the back of the brake pads with anti squeal spooge is such a standard thing your mechanic should have done this first. I mean it's elemental. Find a new mechanic....

Where it squeaks without touching the brakes it may just be 1 of the wear warning tabs is bent or 1 pad is worn and the squealers doing its job, also it could be a piece of the anti rattle hardware is out of place or the backing plate is touching the rotor, either way I agree with Doug if your mechanic didn't find the cause it's time for a new mechanic
