I have a 2013 Sierra crew cab SLE with remote start wired but didn't come with the remotes, or it turned on. I have two remote start remotes that when start is pressed the lights come on, but of course, it will not start. Is a dealer the only way to get the code to turn it on? I don't like dealers since I've had not so good experiences with them.

There is a sequence for the remote start.  You push the lock button twice, and when it beeps, then push the start button on the remote and hold it until it starts.  At least, that's the way my '08 Sierra 2500HD works.  When you first push the start after hitting the lock twice, you should hear the pump prime and the glow plugs start if you have a diesel.  You might also check your VIN to make sure that it should have remote start at all.  Check inside the driver's door or in the glovebox for the VIN codes.

I'd start with the VIN or the vehicle build sheet in the glovebox.

Look at the RPO label, in the "A" section (the list is typically alphabetical).

Look for the following codes:

AP8 - keyless entry with remote start prep

AP3 - keyless entry with factory installed remote start

If you see AP3, you for sure just need factory fobs programmed to the truck and it will work.

If you see AP8, its a 50/50 shot.  It could have had the factory remote start installed at one point during its life, or it could have never had it installed by any of the previous owners.

If it was installed during its warranty period, a dealer can run the repair history and should be able to see it.

My first thought upon reading this is that there is a pending code.  Is the CEL lit up?
