2022 Silverado LTZ (Refresh) sound upgrade

Recommended Posts

I'm finally getting the project to upgrade the sound in my truck under way.

Front: JL Audio C2-650 (components)

Rear: JL Audio C2-650X (coaxial)

Subs: (2) JL 10w1v3-2

Amp: Audio Control D-6.1200

Sub amp:  Punch 60x2,  I bought the amp in 1995 and it is still going.  It actually puts out more power that the Rockford Fosgate P500X2 that I bought for my Camaro.

Since I am putting 6.5" speakers in place of the 6x9, I'm wondering if I will have space to mount the JL tweeters above the 6.5" speakers in the door.  If I can, I will be replacing the dash speakers another pair of speakers, if not, I'll just replace the dash speakers with the JL tweeters from the C2-650.

I ended up purchasing the LLJ custom harness for the install to make it easier.  Usually, I just run new speaker wire from the amp to all the speakers but, I feel like being lazy this time.  The only thing that sucks it that it'll take them 35 business days to make and ship out the harness.  While I'm waiting, I'll just start installing the speakers and sound deadening material in the doors.

Subwoofer box prices have gone crazy.  I usually build my own boxes and have done so for $50 - $100 with a lot of MDF left over.  I've called a bunch of shops around houston and have been quoted me 300 on the low end and 600 on the high end for a basic sealed box.  The $300 box would have been assembled with no carpet or coating of any kind on the MDF.  I did find a place to build what seems to be a nice box with curved edges on the front to match the curve of the seat, built to the specs of the subs and with bed liner coating on it for under $300 shipped to my house.  Hopefully it is as good as the pictures look online.

While I'm doing the install, I will be adding some ambient lighting to the truck.  I have already installed a 12v socket for my radar detector along with two additional USB plugs.  Also, I hate that these trucks don't have HD radio.  Houston radio stations suck if you like rock/metal/ 80's. 94.5 is garbage.  96.5 on HD 2 is a pretty decent station for rock and they also have a station that plays 80s music.   I may have a solution to add HD radio to my truck, I should be testing it out sometime this week.  If it works, post it on here in case anyone else is interested.  Since my trial XM is up, I tried using the external hard drive I stored my music on (its 500gb, but I only have 160 gb of music on it right now).  Someone mentioned on another post that playing music off a usb hard drive/ thumb  sucks, and it does in these trucks.  I could not find anything in the menu to make it shuffle the music on the hard drive and it will not let me go past the first 8 songs or albums while I'm driving.

Update on progress:

JL C2-650X installed in rear doors along with sound deadening and baffles.

Modified the front door speaker adapter to install both the 6.5" and tweeter in the 6x9 location.  The components and the dash speakers should be installed this weekend.

Looked at options to replace the dash speaker.  The options on crutchfield are the Kickers, Kenwood and Pioneer.   Decided against the kickers because they have a paper cone.  I did not hear a difference between the kenwood and pioneer speakers but, I decided to go with the pioneers because they are 2 way, handle a wider frequency range and handle more power than the kenwood.

I contacted the shop that is building the box for me.  It is being sent to a shop to be sprayed with bedliner coating and then should be shipped out this week.

As of right now, changing the rear door speakers to the JLs and putting the pioneers in the dash did not make any significant difference in the sound compared to the Bose.  The amp and DSP should fix that.  I've had all the JL speakers in another car and they sounded way better than they do in the truck right now.

Still have another month to go as far as the LLJ harness to install the amp.

I just tested out the HD radio module that I purchased.  After running into several problems, I finally got it to work.   I just need to figure out where I'm going to mount everything.

Has anyone taken the center console apart on the refreshed trucks yet?  I'm trying to figure out how to get to the factory sub so that I can disconnect it and send the signal to the input on the DSP.

Interested on the HD radio module. What was involved to install, can you give details how you installed it and how you got it to work? Any picture of the install?

As far as the module, it is the Directed DMHD1000.  It is no longer being made and the package says not for resale.  You can find a few online. I have an extra one, but have not decided whether or not to sell it or keep it for a spare.

https://www.amazon.com/Directed-DMHD-1000-Connect-Universal-Modulator/dp/B00CEFV04E

I just connected everything and had it sitting on the passenger floorboard to test it out, once I verified that everything works, I disconnected everything and took it out of the truck.  I will figure out where to mount everything, I'll reinstall later when I install the amp.

To make it work, you will need to buy rca cables, a fm modulator and an antenna adapter.  I grabbed the power and ground from the 12v socket that I installed in the truck.

I've tried a connecting it via a bluetooth transmitter, but the truck will not connect to it.  I then bought a rca to usb adapter, but the infotainment system would not recognize the device.    There may be another way to connect it, but I talked to various shops and they said it could not be connected at all.

When I actually get around to doing the permanent install,  I can take pictures for you and post it.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi @homermacleod,

Why did you choose 6.5 over 6x9 for the front speakers.

I took the 6.5 components out of a vehicle that I sold a while back. I like the way that the JLs sound, so there was no need for me to spend money to buy another set of speakers (6x9).

Once I'm done, I'll have 10 speakers in the truck instead of the 7 speakers I had with the bose.

Sound great.

I'm thinking about going active 3-way, but not sure if the tweeter would be too low.

Have you installed the tweeter inside the door already? What's the sound like?

I don't really want to make a hole for the tweeter on the A pillar.

I'm still modifying the speaker adapter for the front door.  Since it's going to be a while till I get the wiring harness from LLJ, I'm not worried about getting everything finished up quickly, I'm just taking asking my time.

One option I considered is building a speaker pod and mounting the tweeter on the dash above the vents by the side windows.  That way you can run your three way without having to cut holes anywhere.

just got my 22 refresh GMC Sierra trying to figure out what harness I need. Where did you find the plugs? I took the glovebox out and looked under passenger dash. No luck easily seeing the plugs.

There are no plugs available for the dash speakers yet.  There is another thread where they say the '19-'21 plugs will work in the doors, but they aren't an exact fit.
