gemarsh Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 We are going to dip to single digits for the high for awhile here. Does the active shutters work in place of the winter guard?
NWStever Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 (edited) If the shutters would suffice, why would GM spend the $ to give you a guard mask? Tongue in cheek or sarcastic reply. Edited December 18, 2022 by NWStever Add clarification to comment response.
gemarsh Posted December 13, 2022 Author Posted December 13, 2022 That's exactly what I am thinking, but what actually are the shutters for then, if'n not to keep it warm? Sure won't cool it down when it's hot! ;>)
NWStever Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 The shutters are for aerodynamics.... reduce overall aero drag of the truck when engine cooling is adequate. The shutters are suppose to open as the engine water temp increases above some setpoint temperature.
gemarsh Posted December 24, 2022 Author Posted December 24, 2022 (edited) The supplement to the diesel supplement to the owners manual has a note. Don't know why gm would make two different supplements. Anyway, setting at the mall waiting on wife, I organized the glovebox and found it... So now I guess the question remains. But truck does have the bra on. Edited December 24, 2022 by gemarsh Speliing 1
Crazy Canuck Posted December 27, 2022 Posted December 27, 2022 Not sure on GM but I remember with my F-150 the shutters would default to partially open below a certain temp to prevent freezing shut. As mentioned above, the primary purpose of the shutters is aerodynamics.

Winter Cover If equipped, the winter cover should be used to enhance heater performance in cold conditions below -5 °C (23 °F). The winter cover installs over the grille and restricts airflow to the engine compartment. For vehicles that did not come with a winter cover, a GM winter cover can be purchased. See your dealer for additional information. When the winter cover is in use, the heater, ventilation, and air conditioning AUTO mode may not function properly. Use the manual settings for comfort.
TripDad Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 I can confirm the duramax does not heat up much in -17F temps. Did not have my grill cover with me.
