Big chunk metal on first oil change

2023 silverado 2500 high country gas....did my first oil change and chunk of metal was sitting at bottom of pan....1/4 inch long and 1/8 in wide and jageed like a spear.......had a hard down shifts into 1st gear but figured truck was learning my driving.....cpl were pretty hard but has since smoothed out...4500 miles

 

Other than that no weird noises and drives normal

 

It is big chunk of aluminum it looks like it sheared off a gear or something, I can post a pic tonight but prolly chevy won't do anything unless truck isn't running right or valid driving noise or issue am guessing......

 

Just took me back as I don't get paranoid or freaked easily.....abd usually wait for weird things to sort out b4 I take it serious.....just can't imagine this much metal off a part can be good thing

 

Purchased new in April so have full warranty

 

Should I bring it up to service dept?....will they do anything if truck is running fine?

I wouldn't worry if you don't have any engine noise or other noise issues.

Sorry to hear this.  Do you have a pic of the piece of metal you can post? 

Also, when you say it was sitting at bottom of pan, I'm assuming you mean it drained and fell out from pan through the drain bolt hole while you were draining oil...correct?

Yeah it was sitting in bottom of tub I used to drain oil.....actually bigger than I thought it was....its steel not aluminum

Still say if the motor isn't making abnormal noises, don't worry. That piece could be from anything. You have a warranty.

It is unsettling for sure.  But as mentioned, you have a warranty.  Be sure to document date, mileage, etc and keep that piece of metal you found.  You could mention it to dealer, but I don't believe they will document your findings.  Not sure dealer would have even looked in drained oil for any metal findings.

 

BTW....are the drain plugs non magnetic? Did you find it by running a magnet in the drained oil tub?

 

NOTE:  I'll be changing my own oil for the first time (500 miles) in the next week or so....I'll keep any eye out for what's in the oil.

Nah just found it sitting at bottom of plastic tub....I kept the oil and piece of metal and have it documented....drain plug is just standard

It might have been something from the manufacturing process that found it way into the pan and it not related to your engine?
