Oil filter question for my '17 5.3L V-8

I left off the R inadvertently. I think I saw where the can is a little thicker on the UPF in that application. 

I dont recall anyone evaluating the media difference between the 2 but my suspicion is that the UPF63R is a blend of regular and syn much like the Champ XL. It really comes down to what flavor you think provides the best value.

Thanks 64B....I have a copy of that as well. (Information on Improved Replacement Spin-On Oil Filter UPF63R for High Feature V6 Engines) However, if you read through it, it shows that this filter is only for the "HIGH FEATURE" V6's. No mention of using it on the 5.3 V8s. That's what brought my question up to start with. Can it be used on the 5.3's without any issues? Why don't they (GM) call it out as a "high performance" filter for the V8s? The V8s are designed to increase oil pressure from 40 psi up to about 60 psi (observed dash gage reading) when RPM's go over 3500. I don't know what the oil pressures go up to on the V6's they call out.

Just trying to figure out why they don't specify this UPF63R filter for the 5.3.......

I interpret as meaning only use the UPF63R on the V6, not necessarily that its the only application. I would have to look it up again but I believe the bypass is the same on both. When I look up my truck by VIN on GM parts it shows both filters. I have a UPF63R on my 2024 L8T gas engine currently. I am going to switch to the Champ Xl after my current stash is gone.

Yes it can be used.  The extra protection it is designed for the V6 is just that extra for that application.  It will work just fine on your 5.3.

All I run on my 5.3L trucks is WIX XP WL10255XP filters with Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 0W-20

If you go to the AC Delco page here: https://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/acesCat.php

You can choose the vehicle application and see what products AC says are for your application. Look in the "E" section and choose "engine oil filters" it will then show you a list of the approved filters. When you want to know more about a filter choose "buyer guide" under that filter for more specs on it. Then chose the "smart page" under the picture of the filter and then "product specifications" from the left lower selections. 

For my 2021 L8T gas engine the list shows the variations of PF63 filters and the UPF63R as being correct for the application. 

The 2024 doesnt show any oil filters. Some of the items for the 2024 MY are not listed yet. 

The site shows the media for a PF63E as being "Polyester" and the media for a UPF63R as being "ASTM A623" Unfortunately ASTM A623 comes back as a tin metal spec and not a filter media spec. Likely a typo but presumably they are different.
