Compatible tailgate

I have a 2004 Sierra 1/2 ton and am curios what years have the same tailgate. Its a short box if that matters

Technically any 1999-2007 will fit because the box is the same for those years.

AVALANCHE tail gates probably won't fit, the tail gate dampener EZE GATE sells (sold?) for the pick up won't fit the Avalanche. To check on parts interchangeability you can call a wrecking yard, they have a Interchange catalog that will tell you what all will fit on just about any vehicle, OR you could go to an On Line factory website that hosts the parts catalogs. Most MFRs don't change P/Ns if the same part is used on other or later models.

GM changes part numbers all the time.

There are parts I have purchased from GM for my 2001 that are on their 4th part number

Yes, I am aware that part numbers change, who would know better than the MFR? I was giving a resource that could be checked and rechecked. While people here have done parts swapping that doesn't mean they didn't get lucky, as you say part numbers change, it's best to go with the mfr and the vin number or the Interchange Catalog that rely ONLY on advice from a forum, good luck!

Chevy and GMC are the same, 1999 (new body) to 2007 classic.
